Ollie did a REALLY wet poo today, and of course this concerned me so I booked an appointment at the vets for tomorrow.

I just went back into the kitchen and found another slightly less wet poo, but it was full of little translucent worm things! Yuck! Poor baby.. :(

So I called the vets back and we're taking him in half an hour to see a nurse about de-worming.

Do I need to get stuff for ALL the bunnies, or should I wait and see if any of them show signs of having picked them up? They all play in the same areas, should I worry that they all could have picked them up? And where could they have come from?

If they all have access to the same outside play area, I would be deworming them all. Chances are he picked them up outside, some wild animals have them and can leave them in the grass if they poop there.

The other buns could pick up his worms by exposure to his poop.

Talk to your vet and see what they advise.

They don't play outside really, unless they visit my parents' garden. But they all play in the living room in the flat..

Just got back anyway, and the vet gave Ollie an injection and asked to see him again in a couple of weeks. Annnnnnnnnnd......... then we checked everyone's cages/litterboxes and Nigel has the worms too... :X

So now I have to take him to the vets as well. It's not the cost of the meds that gets me, it's the consultation fee! If I have to do it for everyone it's going to end up costing a total £230 ish!

Is there anything I can buy to de-worm them at home? I'd just worry about it, like if I gave them the wrong amount or something. :?

Is there no way they will let you take all the bunnies in in one consultation, or maybe jus offer you half the price if they wont offer you one consulation fee for alot of bunnies! I know when our cats had cat flu they had to inspect them and give them injections so they let us bring them both in under one appointment. Its worth asking. If not, ask your vet if they sell a worming version. We give our cats worming tablets at home which we buy from our vets. Although i may consider buying some of that Panacur myself! You never know when you are going to need it. I mean, imagine if your rabbit got something like head tilt and you knew you could give him the correct medicine as soon as you noticed, at least until you could get to the vets.

I just found this, also on eBay, we use Spot-On on our cats, so i can say its a well known brand (although i know Panacur is too).

I would call your vet and ask them if they will do a group consult. Since the one bunny has already been diagnosed, the rest should be the same medication but in weight appropriate amounts.

If possible, I would go through your vets before looking into home remedies. It is possible to get dewormers you can use at home, but if given in the wrong does, it can be deadly.

So call up your vet and see what they have to say. If they are not willing to work out a deal with you, then I would look in to alternative home treatments.

It appears that the Xeno 450 is basically Ivermectin. The treatment depends on the worms. I suspect you are seeing either roundworms or possibly pinworms....Fenbendazole (Panacur) would be the drug of choice for those parasites. But identification is essential to know what to attack. I have no idea what is available over the counter in the UK....but in the US, Panacur is available without prescription at many farm supply stores. As with any drug, there can always be risks so using this drug should be under the direction of a vet.

Well, we took Nigel to the vets today and asked the vet about treating the rest of them. He gave us stuff to treat everyone, so the total we've paid this weekend is only about £65, which is better.

He was going to give us the Xeno 450 Spot On, but they didn't have enough in for everyone so we ended up with Lapizole oral spray. The active ingredient is Fenbendazole - that's the same as the Panacur isn't it?

Soooo... in three days when the treatment ends everything gets a really good scrub down and disinfect, and then we hope hope hope that nothing comes back...

Hey, i jus thought i'd ask on this topic, as it seems appropriate, what did the worms look like? Itsjust i just found a wet poo of Lottie's (only like a cecal) but when i looked at it i noticed 2 long thin white bits, and it reminded me of this topic. I've never seen anything in her hutch or anything before. Were the worms moving? These ones aren't but the poo doesn't look completley 'pooish', it has a few different 'bits' in it. I'm just a bit worried and i thought i would ask seeing as you have just had this problem.

To be honest, if you search 'pinworms' on wikipedia - they looked like the picture there. I know those are human ones but I assume they'd look kinda the same..?

They were translucent white, and yes, they were still wriggling.

And just a note to say they everyone is looking much better, no squishy poos for the past day or so and everyone's finished their medicine. We did a massive cleanout of everyone and disinfected all the cages/litterboxes, washed all fleece, binned all cardboard etc. Fingers crossed for no further signs, but we're looking good at the moment! :)

I'm still confused, i think i will mention this to the vets on Friday. The ones i saw were not moving, long white thing things. They were similar to that, except it was almost like it could have been all one. It was alot bigger, like a very thin piece of white fleshy string....

Sorry for hijacking your thread!
