Our little Himalayan cross Albus has all of a sudden stopped eating as much hay. He went to a bunny boarding while we were on holiday, and since he came back it's been a real struggle to get him eating his timothy hay. He has absolutely no reservations about eating pellets or fresh greens, as he's been wolfing them down, but just doesn't seem interested in the hay.

We've taken him to the vet and were told that it sounded like a bit of stress-induced anorexia, so we were given Ranitidine and Emeprid to dose him with three times a day. The trouble is that trying to give him the oral suspensions and taking him to the vet seem to be stressing him out more as we have to restrain him to give him the meds and take him in the car to the vets, which results in him sitting in his carrier, shaking in fear.

He's also producing less poo than normal, but still going regularly. We've been giving him more odd the stuff that he does want to eat to make sure everything keeps ticking over. Does anyone have any ideas on how we can get our little boy eating again?

Just a few questions.

Did the vet do a thorough dental exam, including checking the back molars? Were any xrays done? Have you tried seeing if he will eat any other varieties of hay? Did you check with the boarding facility to see if there was anything that occurred there that might account for him not eating the hay, ie. did they feed him a different hay there that he liked better, or was he even eating hay there? Have you checked your current hay to make sure it hasn't spoiled, or bought a new batch of it and tried to see if he would eat that?

Yeah, the vet did a full dental but no x-rays. His 'brother' Alfie is still eating the other hay as normal. Took your advice though and tried changing hay variety, although he had been eating the same variety at boarding, and he showed a little bit of interest. However, I saw him poking around his litter tray and eating some of the cardboard pellets from there, which gave me an idea...

Put some of the hay into his litter tray and he started munching it all up. It seems he doesn't want to eat hay from his nice clean hay trough, or even a bowl, and will only entertain it when it's been lying in with all his poop. Strange little boy.

He's still not eating quite as much as he was before, but his stools seem to have returned to normal now.

Whenever my one rabbit was a baby, she loved hay. One day, I noticed that her interest had decreased. By this time, she was past the baby years. He could just be losing interest, but because this happened after boarding, this probably isn't the case. I would try a few different kinds of hay (just not alfalfa) and mix some Timothy hay in with it. Then, gradually stop using the other hays, until there is just Timothy hay left. Hope this helpsn
