I'm doing a series of posts today to get a feel for what changes might be good for the rabbitry. As we all know - springtime is coming - a time of new hope (hopefully?) - and of fresh air and many times folks will "clean house" or start new routines because they feel energized, etc.

Me? I'm starting to feel energized...and thinking about adding some things to the rabbitry forum if I get help (or even if I don't).

SO...what topics would those of you who don't breed like to see? Anything special you wish we'd do? What have been some of your favorite threads so far?

I'm open to hearing any and all suggestions!

I'd love a thread with pictures of different coloured kits as newborns. I've found something like it online and I think it would be a pretty cool thread; interesting for none breeders and could be usefull for accident litters/breeders :)

I love to read anything involving genetics, colors, 'which breed is this?', etc. These are questions that a lot of non-breeders aren't familiar with, so I think the breeders in the rabbitry are the best people to teach it!

I would love to see a thread where you are taken from newborn to weaned with a litter for those who love to see babies.

We should have a nice, expansive breed ID help page.
Thanks Erin - I think I started a section for the breeders to give their ideas too...I'll make sure to take note of this.

I would love to see pictures of the colours of rabbits. Like a picture of a tort Holland lop, and a description that says it is a tort, including other breeds that have that colour would work too. Or maybe a description or the colour, then several photos of different breeds of that colour. Maybe even some pics of that colour in young kits so people can get a good idea of what colours they have. The genetics of the colour would also be neat for those who are interested.

A list of the abbreviations for show and breeding and what they mean would be so helpful. I know some of them, but others just confuse me.

I would like to see a list of common health concerns and breeder treatments for them. Sometimes what we talk about in the Infirmary isn't going to help a breeder. I know, though, that we can learn from each other on how to take care of our rabbits' health concerns!

I would really like to see some info on how to take care of pregnant does, what to do if the delivery doesn't go well, how to know if the delivery isn't going well, and things to look for to make sure mom and the babies are doing well (mastitis, etc).

My favorite rabbitry posts are the ones following the litters as they grow. I love seeing the lil' bunners.

I also really like the what breed is my bunny posts.

I learn a lot from the rabbitry forum, even if I'm not and probably never will be a breeder.

Really love these ideas and I think you hit it right on the nail, Kate!

Would it be more helpful to have specific breeds with pictures and colour descriptions of thosecertain breeds, especially since not all breeds come in all varieties/colours?

It doesn't really matter to me, I just want to see examples of the colours. Maybe if it was organized by breed, it could have the colours listed by variety (white, coloured etc), then the actual colour. This could be difficult to get a picture for each colour for each breed.

No problem.

The reason I did it this way is that in the past I've asked for topics and then had folks who don't breed tell me privately, "Well...I thought about this but I wasn't a breeder...".

So I wanted them to feel comfortable posting too.

2nd this one.

I would love to see and thread about how rabbitrys are set up I know a breeder and a pet rabbit sometimes have different size requirements and such.

I would love to learn things like that.

I would also love to see a list of recognized breeders of each breed. So for instance if I go looking for a dutch breeder I can go to this page and say ok here are my options.

I second the business side of things also.

We've had some really great ideas but one thing I doubt we'll do (although it is a good idea Kat) - is to do a list of recognized breeders.

Why?

We don't have a chance to check out every breeder and it might seem like we're giving our "approval" of the breeder.

I do plan to have links to the specialty clubs for each breed and those clubs normally have a list of breeders that are affiliated with them.

I've usually been of the opinion that if I want to deal with a breeder - I want to know they're part of ARBA and also part of the specialty club (which I'm about to join) - because to me - it implies that they are learning more about their breed and breeding towards the standards all the time.

Of course - implying that isn't proving it to be true...but one can hope!

What about a 4-H area for people involved in 4-H (both rabbit and not rabbit projects) to talk about 4-H stuff. Even though it does vary from region to region, it is fun to see what other clubs are doing.
