Hello. I have 6 rabbits, 2 adults and 4 younger rabbits. 2males and 2 females. The younger rabbits are the children of the 2 adults.

Tonight when I was in my room I noticed that the mother of the younger ones, Frau Schona, was in there also (the rabbits have the run of the house)so I went down to pet her and she did notrun away or anything but she started whimpering like she was being hurt and after whimpering for a little bit she got really aggressive and tried to bite my hand. She is usually not aggressive and she has done this before but she just stopped doing it. Any idea on why she is making a whimpering like noise and have any of your rabbits ever done this? She is not spayed.

Also, the father of the younger ones, Moose, makes a grunting like noise, which is also why I named him Moose. I have also noticed that the 2 male young rabbits have also started doing this. They all very hormonal and before they were neutered they used to spray everywhere. Any idea on why they make this noise?

Thanks
andrew

not a clue, but we'll bump the thread for you. :)

It sounds hormonal to me. :)

How old is your girl?

SAS :)and PIPP :bunnydance: (who whimpers when she's mad and hormonal)

PS: My other bunny grunts when I feed him. He honked at me once, sounded just like a goose!

Hi

Thanks for your reply. So does this mean she is pregnant again as the last time I recall her doing this is when she was pregnant. The only thing is that all of the males are neutered! She just started doing this too so if she was mad I do not know what got her that way.

Schona isa little more than a year old. She can be quite temperamental (she scratches everything!) and hates being picked upbut Irarely ever hear her whimper or get attacked by her which is what she did, she lunged for my hand. I was quite surprised.

Yes, Moose and the 2 boys, Max and Moritz, honk and grunt all the time. Mostly they do it when they are running around the room and make territorial droppings and when they mount each other (which does not happen all that often now because they are now neutered) The funny thing is that I am hearing the girls honk now when they mount each other and leave droppings.

Thanks for your help! :D

oh and would this be the correct place to post pics?

ps: she and the other 2 are going to be spayed soon so do you think this will help?

Best place for the pics is the Bunny Blogs section. :)

Here's a good site about rabbit language.

http://www.paperglyphs.com/rabbits/rabbittalk_intro.html

My bunny was spayed at 6 months, but she'd go through false pregnancies and build a nest before that. The timing seemed pretty random.

Has anything changed lately? Have you had her and the boys for awhile? Normally it is hormonal or territorial -- mine isSO territorial.

And how long ago were the boys neutered? They can stay fertile for up to a week or two after their operations.

If you're planning on getting her spayed, maybe best to do it soon and have her checked out to make sure she's not cranky because she's not feeling well. (Loud tooth grinding is a sign of pain, if you've heard that).

Thanks I will have some pics up tommorow!

From the Language of Lagomorphs site:

"Finally, a rabbit in terror or in severe, acute pain may scream. I'm told it is a terrible sound, but, fortunately, I've never heard this vocalization. I sincerely hope you never hear it either."

I am pretty sure that is what I am hearing :(

She does not live with the 2 boys yet. She lives with Moose (her "partner" who has been neutered for over 6 months and they get a long fine) and her 2 daughters. The 2 males have been neutered only for a few weeks and they are still very hormonal sometimes (mounting each other often) so I am thinking it will be best to wait? Plus that and they do not get a long very well with Moose. It will be much easier when they are all bonded and they do not have to be in seperate rooms!

Frau Schona and the girls will all be spayed probably some time next week so I will definetely have the vet check her out when I am there. I have heard her grind her teeth but I did not think she was in pain I thought she was just annoyed with me or something. Like I said before, she can be very moody.

Are you sure it was a scream? Rabbit screams sound a bit like a human baby crying, except painful and scary. She could be growling. Two of my girls do that. Fey sounds like Marge Simpson when she growls. Her sister Sprite sounds a little like a cat growling.

If she is in pain, at least you already planned on taking her to the vet.

As for the boys, my boy Loki oinks when he is happy. Mainly when he is hopping towards me, a favorite toy, or his girlfriend Mocha. Sometimes he also oinks and circles Mocha in a mating dance, even though he was neutered before I adopted him last June.

Our Chippy is not spayed. She's about 1 1/2 years old and seems to be in a perpetual false pregnancy/nesting mode.

She's a very happy, bouncy, binkying bunnie, but when she very serious about her nest she can be a bit grumpy. She can make all kinds of noises....sounds like a little car that can't get started. One of her sounds is what you are discribing....a whimpering. She also growls, grunts, oinks, huffs, hums....and probably a few more that are nondescript.

I've only had one of my bunnies scream. Binkie and I had it out one day over cleaning her cage....she bit me hard and wouldn't let go, so I turned her litter pan over on top of her. She SCREAMED. It's a sound you'll never forget or confuse with other bunnie sounds. It's loud, shrill, and scary!!!

Thank you everyone, I appreciate your replies.

It was more of a whimper and I think that it was indeed a false pregnancy because I did notice the fur on her stomach becoming thinner and more fluffs of fur around the house. Everything is fine now though and I have not heard a whimper in a few days so it must just come and go. I am glad that it was not a scream that I heard! But when she attacked andtried tobit my hand she also growled at me.
