So, yesterday I went in to get my flu shot. There is that new needle that goes right below your skin, so I decided to try it. Let me tell you, it hurt WORSE than the normal one. My arm was extremely sore - I couldn't even bend it! When I woke up this morning, my arm hurt worse and the whole area around the injection site was swollen the size of a plum. And today, the skin started turning white and stings really bad. And it's getting even more swollen. I'm going in tomorrow if it's not any better. Does anyone know what's happening? Is it normal? I have a pretty bad immune system because I currently have mono and pneumonia. Do you think that could be it? It hurt A LOT when the doctor injected it. Anyone else tried the new needle?

It sounds to me like you might be having some sort of allergic reaction. Usually when you get a flu vaccine they recommend what sort of pain relievers you could take (e.g. tylenol) if your arm is sore but an allergic reaction would be better treated by benadryl.
I got my flu vaccine earlier this week as they are required by my university. I intentionally went to the pharmacy as opposed to the vaccine clinics where the pharmacy students are giving the vaccines (especially after the stories I heard about them giving the TB tests where it took some of them a good 10 minutes to do it). I know they need the practice, but I'd rather they practice on eachother. It was actually my first flu "shot" as all my previous ones were the intranasal.

They shouldnt be giving you the shot at all while you are sick. I have a cold right now and they wont give it to me. I had to wait for audrina to get well before I could get hers this week.

I agree that it doesn't sound right. You should not have gotten the flu shot while you are sick. I would go in now and get checked, because you could be dangerously sick. I hope you get better.

So I went and got it checked, and it was an allergic reaction. I got an antibiotic and the swelling has started to go down. They knew I was sick, but they still gave it to me... Hmm...

They told you it was an allergic reaction and then gave you an antibiotic? Or was the antibiotic for something else?

Why would they give an antibiotic for an allergic reaction...a simple antihistamine would've worked fine (Benadryl)...unless they were giving it to you for your pneumonia...did they say?

Yea, the antibiotic was for pneumonia, I should have been more clear. Ugh, I also just found out that I have anemia. Yep, fun Thanksgiving break. I just hope my family doesn't get sick. I've been a hermit whenever I'm home lol I talk to my fish now. On the bright side, my arm is almost completely back to normal.

I hope you're feeling better now, I'd be super cautious about getting any more flu shots from now on. I'm also amazed that they gave you the shot when you were already sick!

My mother has ended up with a permanent lung condition after having an immune based reaction to the shot, needless to say I will never get one in case I react like she did, then again it's probably a different shot in the US than it is here.

Feel better soon

KittyKatMe: I hope you feel better soon. You have fish? What kind of fish? I have three clown loaches and two bristlenose plecos. I am a member on fishforums.com. Are you a member? If so, what is your username? Mine is Angelclown. If you are not a member, you should join, they have fantastic advice.

Is there is not any other alternative of getting the flu shot. It really pains. Last time after flu shot i was sick for 7-10 days. I don't like to take shots but they always give me that only. Can't they go for a medicine...

Thefree doctors excuse is a note used specially in office for leave purpose.

I have a 30 gal with my 1 albino Cory, 2 rosy reds, 1 silver white cloud, 1 neon tetra, and endless reproducing tadpole snails. I also have a betta in another tank, and a crayfish in another. I know I should be keeping schools, but I've had this tank for so long and the fish are old so I just want to keep it the way it is until they die. But I do take good care of them and everything. I am actually not on fishforums. I'm going to join soon! Yay!

I don't know why people get flu shots anyway. I never have shots for anything.

I could understand a flu shot if it's some sort of risk if you don't or you work with kids. I've never had a flu shot either and never plan to (I guess I don't really understand the point). I've never had a flu, only minor colds here and there. Tho last time I was sick I had strep that was yuck.

I got the flue shot all 4 years of undergrad because my university offered it for free to students and, well, I didn't have time to be sick.
Now I'm at a "University of Health Sciences" which means we're all health professional students. Every program but mine (vet med) works directly with human patients and we interact with human clients and animal patients. My university requires that every student be vaccinated for the flu (as well as a whole host of other vaccinations and antibody titers.)

I always get shots for everything. It's kind of annoying, but I get sick so much and believe me I don't need the flu over what I already have. Today, my strep test revealed positive. And I have a bad inner ear infection. I mean, I REALLY don't need the flu.

Cool! Yeah fishforums is a great site. They know about fish. There is a guy on there that sells fish food, called plecocaine. It is supposed to be really good stuff. My fish do like it. When you do join and are able to post, look me up, I am Angelclown on fishforums. I have reffered 1 or 2 people that are on here over there when their fish were having problems. You will love it on fishforums. They are knowledgeable about tanks and fish.

Yeah I have a 55 gallon with two clown loaches and two bristlenose plecos. I had three clown loaches before, but I lost one a couple days ago. It was my medium clown loach, Flash. You can read about it when you join and can post, it is under the General Freshwater section titled Deep clean of 55 gallon tank. It is towards the end that I posted about Flash passing away.
