Well, Tigger has an appointment with a vet tomorrow to check out a marble sized lump on the side neck/jaw area. We're trying a new vet so I hope all goes well.

Haley was the one that found it so I'm very grateful to her, and she's showed me how to properly make a tent to give him a shot of Bicillin every other day.

We all love Tigger so much already, and I was wondering if anyone could give us advice and/or support. I've read most of the articles on abscesses in the library so I'm feeling pretty confidentabout treating him.

As always, I'll keep everyone updated.

Hope all goes well with Tigger :) My recent foster bun has recently had treatment for a dental abscess and touch wood, the meds seem to be working well for her. The abscess itself was excised reasonably in a complete form initially, and was packed with Clindamycin (Antirobe in the UK, unsure of its tradename in the USA). In addition she's received Amoxycillin injections every other day as well.

Good Luck!

Ok, we're back! Haley decided to check out this vet, Dr. Smith, with me, and the visit went well.

In regards to is lump, the vet is pretty sure it's an abscess, and for now he will be on Baytril until we get a surgery date to remove it. While he's under, he'll probably get neutered.

He is otherwise doing well; he weighs 3 lbs, has nice teeth, but had really dirty ears.

He was such a good boy and received some treats when we got home :)

Kathy- how is Tigger doing? Is he a good boy taking the meds?

You know, I was thinking, it might be worth it to try the Bicillin and see how he does if this baytril doesnt help at all. I know we talked about not wanting to stress him out with shots all the time but it might be worth trying once and seeing how he handles it- then if he gets scared and stressed we can nix it. I figure we might as well try since I have the meds here and everything. Who knows, it could end up saving you a lot of money if it did work...

Let me know what you think and keep me posted!

Haley

Haley, it can't hurt to try it...but I feel terrible for him because giving Baytril is a very simple thing to do, but he gets pretty stressed out about it. He seems to take it worse and worse with every dosage so idk what to do to make him feel better. I think I'm becoming that bad medicine lady since I'm the only one that gives it to him :?

-Kathy

I will tell you what I do in this situation, since it comes up pretty often around here. :? If he has to have his medicine twice a day, then come and get him out for cuddles and treats at least once a day when he is not getting any medicine or unpleasantness at all. Make that your special time together, when all he gets are fun things like goodies and petting. Do that as often as you are able to, and that should make a big difference. I know they are truly excellent at making us feel guilty, we just have to be strong and know it's for their own good! :p

Oh wow I assumed he would be good about the meds since he was so good at the vets office. And its tooty fruity flavored! lol

Are you giving him a treat afterwards? Thats what I always do and they seem to forgive me. Wrapping him in a towel and holding him against you might help as well.

I had something work with a young english lop who was getting bicillin QOD and really really freaking out big time....
his owner would kneel on the floor in front of him and we would drape a towel quickly over him in front and then she would hold him down and at the same time she would throw a piece of banana under the towel in front of his mouth.
it got where he would grab the banana and I would be tenting the skin and giving the shot as fast as I could from behind . At this point he barely knows he's getting the injection but thinks he's just eating.

Well, I'm staying at home this week and commuting to school (about an hour away) so that I can still give Tigger his medicine. I'm the only one that can do it in my house, haha. It shouldn't be a big deal since I only have classes on Monday and Wednesday.

I really think the abscess is getting smaller, but it could be my imagination. He still has one more week of Baytril until he goes in for his operation...unless Haley wants to try the injections. I'm up for either, but to be honest, I'm still leaning toward surgery since the poor guy gets so scared (and I wouldreally like him to get neutered since he's starting to spray). Oh well...we'll figure it out this week; just wanted to let everyone know that he's doing ok:)

Hi, Haley! Tigger is doing really well--he takes the Baytril so much better when Glynn flips him over and he can't actually see the medicine. I think I'm going to call the vet's office tomorrow to schedule an appointment to remove the abscess, hopefully for next week. Do you think that sounds good?

-Kathy

Tigger has an appointment to get his abscess removed (and possibly neutered,if all goes well) this Thursday, September 4th!

Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers :)

Thanks,

Kathy

Sending lots of prayers for sweet Tigger tomorrow.

I would put a towel in with him that smells like your home and ask that they keep it with him- maybe that will help calm him.

You must be so nervous- I know I am. I'll be at school all day but thinking of you and Tigger. If you have time, give me a call when you hear something.

:hug:Haley

Please do well in surgery, Tigger. You'll be in my prayers and thoughts as well. :hearts

Comfort and extra support vibes to your mom.

For Tigger and Kathy, hugs.

:hug::hug:

Thank you for your prayers and thoughts!

I just got off the phone with the vet, Dr. Smith, and she said that what she removed was not an abscess but rather some abnormal tissue that she is sending away to Colorado State for tests. He was also neutered successfully, and I'll be able to pick him up in about an hour...I'm still really worried about him, especially since I don't know what the lump is/was.

I'll report back soon!

-Kathy

We're back!

Tigger is such a trooper! Heseems like he's feeling fantastic--he was bouncing around when he saw me at the vet's office! He received the "Purple Heart Award" from the staff for being brave during his surgery; I thought that was so cute.

So, like I said, we'll find out what the lump was next week.

I have a bunch of stuff to giver Tigger now. We have some more Baytril, Metacam, Reglan, and Critical Care (if we need it).

I'm so thrilled that he's doing well. I'm just not so thrilled with the cost:shock:I am really going to look into pet insurance. I had equine insurance when I had a horse, and it was amazing.
