Hi all!

I got my first bunny Luigi a little less than a year ago and things were swell with him at first. No problems litter training and he was pretty friendly after the first month or so.

About two weeks ago, my mother adopted another rabbit from the shelter. We have no previous experience bonding rabbits so this is all new to us. I was told at first (I was away at college at the time) that they didn't get along at all at their first introduction at home. I think my mother was wrong introducing them first in my room, A.K.A Luigi's home.

They will fight if they are both loose in my room. They do better when they are loose in a different room that is probably "neutral territory". So far, Luigi has gotten a bite to the ear and shoulder but nothing serious, yet. Should we keep trying or are they always going to have to be separated?

Also, the new bunny Shadow constantly poops outside the litter box. He was also peeing outside the boxes too, but that seems to have stopped. We have two boxes in my room, plus one in each of their cages. The poop seems to be concentrated to one corner, but it's a pretty big area. Is there anyway to stop this?

Help!

You're right, it should have been in neutral territory. Naturally they both are stressed right now, so the poops outside the litter boxes are to be expected. I know it's spilled milk at this point, but it's best to let the current rabbit pick out the new one & many shelters allow such 'speed dates'. I would keep them apart until the new rabbit settles in a bit more, as evidenced by using the litter box. If you had a way to let them be in the same room & moving around but unable to touch [like in separate xpens], I'd say that would be the next step, until they become at worst indifferent to each other.

They did meet at the shelter, and I was told it went very well.

Usually (in the same room) one is away in their cage and the other is roaming around the room. The rabbit expert at the shelter apparently told my mother Shadow (the new bunny) should be kept in his cage almost always and give Luigi free range of his territory. Not sure if I agree with this.

I'll definitely look into getting some xpens, or maybe those NIC grates.
