As for the flecks in the fur you see, I would take him to the vet, don't bring him in the house just yet, and keep him away from any other pets you may have. If they are fleas or mites in his fur they will spread quickly if medical attention is not seeked.

Yes, I'd keep Gizmo away from any other furry creatures in the house if you have them. Just until you get him checked out.

Kirbyultra, that is a good idea (putting the food in the litter), because he does seem to poop right where he eats (although he seems to pretty much poop everywhere.) We just got him Friday night, so I hadn't had a chance to take him to the vet. I will do that first thing tomorrow. Thank you for all your answers/ideas.

I would book an appointment at your closest rabbit savvy vet to get checked out before applying anything for mites. They will give you some advantage and tell you the right dose to use. Check ups are sometimes free or inexpensive and are really worth doing whenever you bring a new bunny home to make sure they are happy and healthy and rule out any problems from and early age. Finding a goo vet early on to answer any questions is always a very good thing. As for handling that's pretty normal. Let your bunny start to settle in and hand feed her pellets. Over time she'll learn to trust you :) please post a picture of the little one! It'll be great to see him/her!

Please note that choosing a vet specializing in exotic medicine for treating rabbits is essential. Cat and dog vets may not give you the right diagnosis nor the right meds/dose and it can be very dangerous.

Advantage and Frontline are products safe for dogs but lethal for rabbits, especially small and young rabbits. Ivermectin and Revolution are medicines commonly given to bunnies for fur mites and ear mites. Revolution in cat kitten doses work very quickly and effectively.

Oh gosh, I can't find the edit button on my phone. I think I misspoke about Advantage. I'm thinking of Advantix. Although I searched on Medirabbit, and while it doesn't say Advantage is harmful, it does say it is ineffective on fur mites.

All that said, it boils down to finding the right professional so that you can get your bunny the help he needs :)

Another reason why a vet is absolutely essential to answer your questions. Forums are great for advice and to elaborate on certain subjects but the right exotics vet can be a very reliable informant :)
