Hi everyone! I thought I would introduce myself and my little guy since we are new. Sugarplum is 9 weeks old Holland Lop and we've had him at home since Saturday. He is such a little sweetheart! I felt like I did a ton of research before we got him, but I definitely experienced something today that almost gave me a heart attack! My daughters and I were taking him for his first check up at the vet and when I went to get his carrier out of the car he was laying on his side and looked dead. I was totally panicked! After I started to quickly try to see if he was alive and I opened the carrier all the sudden he just popped right up! I guess my vet isn't that knowledgeable about bunnies because he didn't have an explanation for the behavior except maybe low blood sugar. When we got him back home (he had a clean bill of health by the way) I hopped on google and found out it is very common and it means they are very relaxed! Phew! He scared me to death, but I'm glad to know the car ride didn't give him a near heart attack.

Anyway, thought I would share that story. So glad to have found this message board and I've already learned so much. Here's a picture of my little guy :)

Yep, I've seen that many of times lol. It really gives you a scare when they jump and fall over and lay like that. Have fun on your new bunny mom adventures!

Hello and welcome to the forum! Sounds like you have a real sweetie for a bunny!

If your vet isn't that knowledgeable about rabbits (surprisingly few actually are) then you could call a local rabbit rescue for a vet reference. They usually know which vets have tons of experience with rabbits. I can't stress how important it is to have the right vet. (One of my first rabbits [20 yrs ago] died because an inexperienced vet gave him omoxycillin.)

It's great that your rabbit is comfortable in the carrier. That isn't super common but sure is handy.

Thank you! Yes, he doesn’t seem very experienced with bunnies. Calling a local rescue for recommendations is a great idea I hadn’t considered.

It's called the 'dead bunny flop' for obvious reasons, and can be quite the scare if you aren't used to it(can still be even when you are used to it :p ). He's adorable and seems to have settled in quite well with you. Not many buns will flop out for a nap on the way to the vet.

You could also take a look at this list to find an experienced rabbit vet near you.
