My husbands birthday is Friday. He has requested that I make baked crab mac n cheese. I made this a couple of months ago, by itself, just so we could try it and see if we liked it. Well he loved it. So he wants a whole dinner this time. I always make him a birthday dinner. What should I make with it? Steak? Need some suggestions

Steak and a nice herb salad would go awesomely with that! And whatever salad you don't use, I'm sure you have some twitchy noses who would love to help finish it off. :)

Salad sounds really good...I might make that for myself and a certain twitchy nose lol...my husband doesnt eat salad...he calls it "rabbit food" lol He eats all other vegetables though. But Gracie would sure appreciate a nice salad

Its really easy...
Canned crab (if you cant find that then imitation crab works just as well)
1 block of Velveeta cheese
1 box of macaroni noodles
Shredded cheese

Preheat over to 350
Boil your noodles until they are almost done
Sautee your crab meat with some old bay and whatever else you like to season with
Cut up the velveeta and melt it on low in a pot with some butter and milk
Mix all of your ingredients together and put it in a baking dish
Bake for about 20 mins (covered with foil)
Add your shredded cheese on top and bake until melted

Its awesome!

Thanks! That sound so yummy, I love crab and mac'n'cheese but I've never thought of combining them (although I've had lobster mac'n'cheese and that was really good)

Thanks Megz! I love this area because of the access to great seafood. Thankfully, crab is the lowest on mercury content so I can have two 6oz servings a week. A lot of the fish and stuff I have to limit because of the mercury content. Not good for pregnancy. But crab is my favorite so Im not complaining :)

If your husband doesn't like salad, then you could do a vegetable medley. Like, herbed zucchini and carrots, vegetable potpourri(its like a veggie salad with a light dressing) or maybe some smothered okra. (I don't know if y'all like okra, I'm the only one in my house that likes it.)
I have recipes for all of these if you're interested.

Ohhh and I have a recipe for the BEST BREAD EVER! Its beer bread, but the beer cooks out. So you'll be able to eat it. Or you could use non alcoholic beer if it made you feel more comfortable. Its super easy and SOO GOOD. If you want the recipe for that, let me know!

I love okra!!! If yOu could give me the recipe for that, the veggie potpourri, and the beer bread that would be great! He loves any kind of bread

Rachel you're awesome lol. Being from the Bay Area means we automatically have the best taste in food ;) lol.

Now I want crabs. D:
I grew up with MD blue crabs. Whenever my sister visits she'd bring me lots of blue crab already picked and frozen. Yummm!!!! and the Bay seasoning is a must!

BEER BREAD:

3 cups flour
3 tsp baking powder (omit if using self rising flour)
1 tsp salt (omit if using self rising flour)
1/4 cup sugar
1- (12 oz) can of beer
1/4 cup of butter, melted.

1.Preheat oven to 375*
2.Mix dry ingredients and beer together. (It makes a sticky dough)
3.Pour into greased loaf pan. - just a regular sized loaf pan.
4.Pour melted butter over the top of the batter.
5.Bake for 1 hour, let cool at least 15 minutes before cutting/serving.
-It makes a really hearty bread, with a crunchy buttery crust. You'll want to dive into the pan with it!

SMOTHERED OKRA:
1 lb okra, chopped
1 tbsp oil
1 (16oz) can whole tomatoes with juice
1 cup finely chopped onions
1/2 c. bell peppers, finely chopped
3/4 tsp minced garlic
1 (2.5 oz) jar sliced mushrooms with juice
salt and pepper to taste.

1.Pour oil in bottom of pot.
2.Add in the onions, bell pepper, and garlic, cook for a few minutes until they're tender.
3.Add remaining ingredients, cover pot and simmer for 1.5 hours on low, stirring occasionally.
4.Remove lid the last 10 minutes.

VEGETABLE POTPOURRI:
3 carrots, chopped
1 yellow squash, halved legnthwise and sliced
2 lb broccoli, stems cut off and florets cut into smaller pieces.
1 red bell pepper, seeded and finely chopped
1 cup frozen peas, thawed
grated rind of 1 lemon
1.5 tsp minced parsley
2/3 cup vinaigrette dressing

In a saucepan of boiling water cook the carrots for 1 minute. remove them with a slotted spoon, rinse them under cold water and set them aside.
Cook the squash in the same water for 30 seconds. Remove the squash, rinse under cold water and set aside.
Cook the broccoli in the same water for 30 seconds, rinse under cold water and set aside.
Pat all the vegetables dry with paper towels.

In a large bowl combine the carrots, squash and broccoli with the pepper, peas, lemon rind, and parsley and toss everything with the vinaigrette dressing.

VINAIGRETTE DRESSING:
2 tbsp white wine vinegar or lemon juice
1/2 tsp dijon mustard
salt and pepper to taste
1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 tbsp mixed fresh minced herbs, such as parsley, chives or tarragon
1 garlic clove, crushed

In a bowl whisk together the vinegar, mustard and salt and pepper. Whisk in the oil a little at a time and continue to whisk the dressing until it is well blended. Stir in the herbs and garlic.

I put it on here, just incase anyone wants to have these recipes too.
I specialize in desserts, so if you need a dessert recipe, just let me know!

Morgan, can I do the okra without the mushrooms? I'm allergic to them. Severe migraine headaches, vomiting, and tongue swells. Will it be as good without it?

I'm also great with desserts. I bake all the time. My hubby will text me while he's at work at ask me "to bake something delicious" lol. I'm surprised he's as skinny as he is. I think I'm going to make his favorite dump cake

Of course you can make it without the mushrooms. Thats the great thing about cooking a recipe like that, you can add and subtract anything to make it just to your tastes. I'm sure it will be just as delicious without the mushrooms!

Oooh, cooking chat! One of my favorite topics :D Here is my blog, I have a decent number of recipes posted. If you have questions on any of them, just let me know: http://cheesewithnoodles.blogspot.com/

I looooove mac and cheese (if you can't tell by the blog name) so the crab mac and cheese sounds delicious. The beer bread that Morgan suggested looks great, I will have to give it a try. For a veggie, you say your husband does not like salad. Does he like caesar salad at all? That seems to be one that everyone likes since the lettuce is coated in dressing. If he likes caesar salad, here is my recipe: http://cheesewithnoodles.blogspot.com/2012/05/caesar-salad.html

Does he like broccoli? I have a roasted broccoli recipe that's topped with a bit of lemon juice. It's really easy and yummy and I think the lemon would go perfectly with the mac and cheese: http://cheesewithnoodles.blogspot.com/2011/11/garlic-roasted-broccoli.html

Let me know if you want anymore suggestions :) We aren't big meat eaters, so I would just go with the mac and cheese (it already has crab!), a veggie, and maybe fruit salad.

I'm getting ready to study as a Pastry Chef, I'm addicted to baking cupcakes and have some delish recipes I'd be willing to share!

Well we ended up having the crab mac n cheese, and i made a regular mac n cheese because not everyone that was there likes crab, steak, corn on the cob, beer bread, and his grandad brought shrimp and I made a cake. Needless to say, he had an awesome birthday dinner.

He loves broccoli, so I will have to try your broccoli recipe. I dont think he has ever had caesar salad, and I love caesar salad, so i will have to make it and get him to try it. This man was strictly meat and potatoes when we got together. He was eating lots of pizza, hot dogs, ramen, sandwiches and steaks. His ex never cooked him anything. She was lazy. I was raised with cooking, so I had to turn his taste buds around. He eats a lot more different things than he used to. So hes always open to try new things
