My boyfriend, who just moved in with me a couple months ago, is very allergic to hay as well. He breaks out in hives if he handles it, and he gets wheezy sometimes. He also has very bad hay fever and allergies to any other grasses and pollens.

I keep my hay in a rubber maid flip top bin. When the bin is closed, it doesn't bother his allergies as much.

We also bought an air purifier. Works wonders, when it's running I can open the hay bin and he won't even sneeze. This is the one we bought:

I also have a vacuum that has hepa filters. Cleaning up after pulling the hay out really helps as well.

Make sure that his medication (if he takes any, things like nasal sprays, anti-histamines, etc) so he is aswell protected as he can be before he comes round.

That's the only helpful thing I have to say, lol. sorry it's not much help.

Bluebird, do you really only feed hay once a week? Do you give them enough for one week all in one go? If I did that there wouldn't be enough room in the cage for the rabbits :)

iluvmybuns - As for the allergies, I would tell your boyf to get his medication sorted before he comes to your house. Some people do develop an 'immunity' to certain allergies if they are exposed to something for long enough BUT it depends on the severity of the reaction. I was mildly allergic to rabbits for about the first few months but I have no real problems now, just itchy eyes and wheezy chest during moulting times.

Thanks guys, he does take allergy meds.

Maybe I need to put the hay in a bin like that...Instead of just hanging out in the closet....And I'll check out the air purifiers.
