My bunny is justbetween 1-2year old and a rescue about 6 months ago I took him from a house that where keeping him under the stairs in a pet carrier, with 3 mad yorkies yapping at him through all sides. After a trip to the vets the next day he came home with various medications for lice, ringworm and e.cunniculi. Strange wee bunny that falls over alot and will actually lick you hand like a dog. Anyway poor Bailey as we named him once he started to recover was most recently attacked by something likea rat in my back garden while in his run, he has been hospitalised ever since, in boththe emergency vets andmy own.

He has four bites around his neck two on the right one on the left and one on his throat along with various scratches and scraps. After nearly 24 hrs in the vets he was sedated, shaved and cleaned up as they where worried about shock they waited. Since this he has become unable to lift his head and the swelling around his face and neck is massive. He is getting critical care as he cannot eat enough, is on antibiotics, fluids when required and panecur for the e.cunniculi which is what they think is causing him to be unable to lift his head at present. Today they have discovered that he doesnt have a blink reflex in his left eye and are now treating this also but we are concerned this could be nerve damage as his ear on this side also is floppy. He has been in the vets now for 5 days and I would like to be able to help him in some way, does anyone have anything I can do for him or any recommenedations I could make to my vet?

I have removed my other two rabbits from my garden adn they arenow in a bedroom until I am convinced there is nothing in my back yard. As they are digging the roads in the streets behindme theneighbours are convinced it may be rats they have disturbed.

I'm so sorry this happened. He may have thought the rat was a kind of dog & tried to be friendly. Poor thing.

I can't think of anything to help poor Bailey right now, but I would think about making the run safer in the future. Even when the road work is done, a rat still could wander out & get in the run. Mesh on top with fastened openings so you have accesses is what I'm thinking about. But I never have Honey out when I'm not there by her pen, so have no personal experience.

Look in the housing section & you should find topics that include pictures of runs. I usually suggest using the search feature to find things, but that would probably turn up every post that says "... rabbit RUNS away when I ..."

Thank you, your right I have two dogs and they all get on great he's probably seen the oppurtunity to make friends. Bailey is kept in the house as he has always been poorly, I only let him out when I am in the house (I couldnt have been more than 20 ft away when he was attacked and I didnt hear a thing). That evening after work was lovely and we had a bbq and I thought Bailey would enjoy some time out, when it started to get a bit cooler I went inside and I normally leave the door open but i closed it on this occasion and thats when I think he was attacked :(

I will be looking into runs for him when he gets out, I havent got him his own permanent one yet as I was hoping he could go in with my other two, as time goes on this is looking less and less likely down to his e.cunniculi. The vets think he will always have high counts adn has the potential to pass it on. Its just management I was working with to keep him comfortable as he is such a happy bunny.

Most of the time I'm glad rabbits don't make noises. I spend the winter in a condo & don't have to worry about complains of barking when I'm not home. But in cases like this, a bit of noise would have been in order, though perhaps by the time you covered the 20 feet, the damage might have been done & YOU'D have gotten bitten too, which would have delayed Bailey's getting treatment.
