So, We just started moving into our new apartment and we did our inspection and we realized that the gas and electric had been turned off for a few weeks.

Well, the refridgerator and dishwasher have this real weird smell to it. Smells old or something to that nature. We can't get the gas and electricity turned on until thursday. I am unsure if the smell will go away after the fridge and dishwasher have been turned on. So, i wanted to know if anyone has experienced this and if so, what did they do to rid of the yucky weird smell?

Thanks in advance.

I hate smelly dishwashers! ours smells really bad sometimes sowe put 1/4 of a cup of whitevinegar in a cup or container inthe top rack and just run a cycle of it and it should get the smell away. Congrats on your new apartment by the way:biggrin2:

I offer you congrats also!

We had an old fridge sitting around with the doors shut, and boy did it STINK! I made a weak bleach solution in a bucket and wiped out the inside of the fridge with it, then wiped it out again with some warm water that had some vanilla in it. Then I left the doors open to air for a couple days.

congrats on the apt! i am moving in to a new apt in may, so wish me luck too!

as for the stinkiness, i would report it to the office right away so they know whatever stinks, you didn't do it. they should clean that for you or deal with it for you if its something because of them turning off the gas or the previous occupant.

i think the above suggestions are great ones, and i offer you a long term solution too. once you clean the fridge and it smells better, buy a small box of baking soda and cut the corner off so it is permanently open. just stick that in your fridge on the door and it should suck up any odors that may be coming from your fridge for a year or so before you should buy a new box!

my mom used to use baking soda in the fridge ALL the time when i was little. every 6 months to a year, she would replace it. i'll tell ya...never a foreign odor :)

good luck!!!

Tracy

There is a product called Citri-shine you can get it near the dishwasher detergent. When the power is back on put it in both cups in your washer and run it through a cycle that should kill the smell.

You've gotten some great advice here already. But, yeah, whenever fridges are turned off for any period of time (not sure about dishwashers), they stink, and it is like an old smell, but still kinda hard to describe-so-it's normal.

Congrats on the Apt:)!

Thank you all for your advice!! I will try the tactics on thursday after i get the electricity turned on.

We are very excited about finding an apt :)

Thank you again.

Congrats on the apartment.

One question: how can you live with no electricity.

And, I'm not sure if your frimiliar with it but Lysol (sp) disinfecting wipes work wonders on stinky stuff...:D

I currently live in the old apartment because i paid it through the 15th of this month. So i have two apartments currently. So, i have been using the water and electricity in my old apartment for meantime until i get the electricity going at the new place.
