Yesterday I was in a really bad mood and after coming home from running a few errands I went to clean. Morgan has been running loose for 1-2 weeks in our kitchen and hallway and makes a huge mess and Riley and her babies are in the bedroom and that was a mess. Besides clothes being put away etc. I put Morgan back in his NIC pen (it's 2 grids high) and then covered one side of it, intending to put the rest on later.

Around 3:45 Will and I left to grab a bite to eat and then went to Blockbuster to get a few movies for the night. We got home around 5:30 and Morgan was running loose in the living room (I had taken the baby gate down we keep up between the hallway and living room so all the bunnies were together). Will gets Morgan and puts him up and I go to finish covering his pen. (I feel horrible. I mean, they've had a litter and then they got loose but I was so mad yesterday at the mess and Will was getting on my nerves but that's another discussion).

As I'm covering the pen Will asked what was wrong with Morgan's eye. I bent down and could see some drainage so Will gets down lower and really looks at it and it's disgusting. He picks him up (he's not a huge rabbit fan) and I said is it a trip to the ER and he said 'definitely'. (At first I just saw the drainage and thought maybe he just had a little irritation).

I call the ER and they said they could see him and it's $75.00 just for the vet to see him. As this is going on my mom is on her way to pick us up to go see the local Pumpkin House (more on that in a minute). She comes and we're waiting outside with Morgan in a cat carrier. I go up and say 'we need to make a stop by the ER but it's on the way'. We all get in and we go to the ER. No one was there and we didn't wait too long but of course they make you wait a little while and I was getting anxious.

They call me back and Will and I go and the vet was a VERY nice lady. She said it's probably from trauma when he jumped out of his pen and something about an ulcer in his eye or on his eye. She gave me two medications: one for pain and then one is an antibiotic and I have to put those in his eye 2-3 times a day. Tomorrow I have to call the normal vet to schedule a follow-up and the ER vet wants his eye re-stained to see if it is doing better. It looks as though his whole eye is swollen and protrouding out some kind of.

Overall, good news as I was fearing the worst knowing our luck. As I'm checking out with I think a vet tech she said they were all commenting on how good he was and I guess suprised I came in and spent $138.00 on him. She said so many people would just think they could get another way or they don't spay and neuter them. I told her there was no way I could let him suffer and Will said eye injurys are very painful.

So we get in the car and proceed to the pumpkin house. It is this house where this guy carves pumpkins every year and sets them out for visitors to see, in his yard. I guess it has grown every year and he does thousands of pumpkins and has others come and help. http://www.wvpics.com/Pumpkin%20House.htm <-- links to some pics.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnAzZrrQNQI]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnAzZrrQNQI[/ame]<-- here is a video too. He had this giant wall/shelf filled with pumpkins and on each of them there is carved a musical instrument (drum, guitar etc.) and they are in groups. As the songs play the insturments line up that are playing at that moment. I didn't watch the video but it's amazing to see this huge wall of pumpkins. I just read and he has over 3,000 pumpkins carved around his home.

We get there and I was thinking this would just be a drive-by look. No this is a big ordeal. There are cars EVERYWHERE and so many people. His street was lined with cars and people were at a stand still. Mom and Will asked if I was taking Morgan and I said yes as I didn't want to leave him in the car. As I said, I thought this would just be a short little thing so it would be ok for him to go with us. I lugged him around for probably 30 minutes but luckily he's light. I got him into the light once and a kid saw him but other than that no one thought it was weird for a girl to be having a cat carrier looking at a pumpkin house lol.

This morning Morgan is in his pen and he bit my pants let when I was putting the meds in his eye. I will have to get Will to help me later but he was really good. Tomorrow I will call the vet to schedule a check-up.

Awwh dear poor Morgan, Keep us posted. I hope his eye heals up and that pumpkin house man sounds amazing!

Moved to the infirmary.:)

Hope he is feeling alittle better.

Be sure and do the follow-up with the vet and do take this seriously...

Is his eye running a lot" Does he seem in pain?
An ulcer in an eye can be slow to heal without the correct meds and attention. you want to be sure that you go to a vet that knows some opthamology and follow directions carefully..keeping your hands clean around his eye and when applying meds.

Thanks :). Yes, I read in an article that he has done that for 30 years. Started off small and that's what it's grown into. Pretty amazing too. It was on the Ellen show two years ago.

Thanks :). You can tell he still doesn't feel good but I let him out of his pen and he was moving around some, just not his normal activity but I'm sure he's not completely comfortable.

Don't worry, I take it very seriously. I said I would be calling the vet and he will get his follow-up. No, his eye is not running a lot. it is not running at all now and if you did not know he had hurt it then you probably wouldn't even know as it looks pretty normal today. Unfortunately finding a vet that deals in opthamology may not be possible. This is a small area so I will have to get whoI can get. One of the larger vet hospitals is where I am now going and they have a 'rabbit vet'. I'm not sure how good he is but he sees all of them. In this area people don't consider taking their rabbits to the vet, they can just get another one.

Cool, How's Morgan?
Thanks for asking. He's very 'calm' today but if you looked at him you probably wouldn't know he hurt his eye. It looks pretty normal today other than where you can see the ointment has been put in there.

Morgan is at the vet right now. It's 3:15 and he's been there since 7:30. I just dropped him off this morning and then will pick him up around 5:30. I finally called about 15 minutes ago as I had not heard anything and I was told I would receive a call after the vet had looked at him. I'm guessing I talked to the vet tech and she asked me a few questions (how did it happen, when I took him to the ER etc.). She asked if it looked better and I said yes. I mentined the ulcer and she said the stain wasn't 'soaking up' basically (I can't remember how she phrased it) and that showed improvement. I guess if he still had the ulcer then it would soak up but since he doesn't that's why it didn't soak in?

She said when I got there the vet would go over things with me and for me to plan on picking him up after work. She said there were some changes to his cornea that are a concern but that's all she would say. Great, I'm sitting here and have 2 more hours to worry about him. I asked if she could tell if he would lose any vision but she said it's hard to tell with pets unless there are obvious signs (i.e. running into walls). Not sure if that's true or not.

This morning he was a wild little man. He was running up and down the hallway, chasing our cat and playing with a towel. He was also getting into the rubbermaid container I was keeping hay in (I need to clean it before putting more in there since he pooped in there). He hasn't been acting like that in a few days. I just hope he's ok. I feel horrible now and I just want to know what's going on. My main fear is he will lose his eye although it looked good today other than some white 'film' on it. Not sure exactly what it is. Please send him some good thoughts.

Thinking of you guys and hoping Morgan is OK.

I know it is a huge worry to you, but, if the worst happens and he does lose his eye, he will cope just fine. There are a lot of bunnies (I think some even on this Forum) who only have one eye, and they still manage to get into mischief and lead a normal life. Obviously, we are all praying it doesn't come to that, but Morgan will be fine whatever happens - after all, he has a great mom :)

Awww, thank you. ::blush:: I just feel horrible because if I had covered his pen then this wouldn't have happened but i know we can't redo the past. It's not so much him losing sight as them removing the eye...that freaks me out, the thought of that. I guess there is a chance he will have to stay tonight as she said to plan on picking him up after work. Poor little guy and mommy worrying here doesn't help lol.

We're back. He has a laceration on his eye and the vet wants to watch it closely. He's scheduled to go back Thursday. She said it's possible he could lose his eye but didn't lean one way or the other. She has sent some pictures to an opthamologist and is hoping to hear back tomorrow from him/her. That's really about all. She stopped the atropine as she said that doesn't do much for rabbits...they break it down too much or something. Is that right? He is on terramycin 3 times a day so she wants him to do that tomorrow and then see him on Thursday or Friday but I'm taking him Thursday.

Morgan is back at the vet today for a recheck. I will probably have to call in the early afternoon and see if they found anything. I thought his eye looked better this morning but it could just be me being optimistic. He's been better about me putting the ointment in his eye so either a) I'm better at it or b) maybe it's not hurting as much as before. I don't know.

I'm really sorry i missed this on Tues.

I didn't realize that it was so serious.

I question the use of terramycin ; there are a lot better antibiotics available although it's not my call
I sure hope that it heals on it's own.

let us know how he's doing

We're back...again. He saw a different vet today but at the same clinic. The first vet he saw on Tuesday stopped by too though and said it looked tremendously better. The second vet agreed just based on the notes and what he had been told (before talking to the first vet I think). He told me that he will always have some discoloration and possibly a little bulge. He told me to quit the antibiotics as it has healed so much.

He did say he could develop glocouma and to watch for that and eventually he may lose his eye but then again I suppose it could happen to any animal, maybe his chance has just increased a little? The vet thinks his vision may be a little impaired but the major damage (the cut) is under his eyelid so he said that won't affect his seeing (obviously if the cut was in the center of his eye it would). I think that's all he said. I am glad the first vet was able to look at him too, that made me feel better.

The vet I saw that prescribed that was the ER vet and I think she said she hadn't dealt with eye injuries in rabbits, or maybe much with rabbits. Maybe that's why? I'm not sure. To me it looks a lot better today. Do you think I should keep using the antibiotics even though the vet said not to? Just to be safe...I mean, I wouldn't think it would hurt him. I'm just worried about the guy, although he seems in good spirits.

If you trust the vet that you saw todayI would quit the antibiotics. I assume that you are probably using an antibiotic salve . Keep a close eye on his eye :)headsmack I'm not trying to be smart-mouthed) and always wash your hands before youdo anything around his eye. if you notice even the slightest changes I would call the vet and go back in.
I have a cat that was hit by accident in her eye by my young blue heeler puppy. she received a blunt force trauma. We did not have surgery done as she is 19 yrs old , however, she did not lose her eye but has lost some sight...the eye has a cloudy appearance but is not painful

you rabbit will adapt to sight change in the eye but it is most important to prevent infection and make sure that that Morgan is comfortable and not in pain.
