Meds for Pneumonia

Pumpkin has been on Lasix and Enroflaxin since April 25 for pneumonia. His sneezing and coughing had decreased but the last couple of days it has started to be a little bit more than it has been and it looks like he is breathing a little bit harder. What are other antibiotics that are safe for bunnies and are stronger to help fight his pneumonia? Thank you!

We've had two rabbits get pneumonia, one didn't make it and the other one we were able to catch it in time - she was given Baytril. This was some time ago, though, and so the protocol might be different now.

Are you nebulizing the baytril or is it oral. Marbofloxacin (Zeniquin) can be used. It is the same family as baytril, sometimes be more effective then baytril. Azithromycin it CANNOT be taken orally by rabbits but it can be either injected or nebulized.

My vet didn't think he needed nebulizing at this time. She did did give Azithromycin in liquid form to be given orally. I haven't given it to him yet but she also gave him Trimthoprim/Sulfa. Why can you not give Azithromycin orally? I've seen on MediRabbit.com, Rabbit.org/health/antibiotic, which is the House Rabbit Society, that it can only be given orally. She also has me continuing the Lasix. She said she thinks his lung may have collapsed from the infection and that it may re-inflate later. I know nothing about that but I will research it tonight. Thanks for your responses. I appreciate all the help I can get!

Sorry I was thinking of Amikacin which was given with Acetylcysteine for my rabbit. Too many As.

You can built your own nebulizer if you vet thinks it will help.

UPDATE! Pumpkin is still on the meds but he is doing great! His breathing is so much better. He will go for another X-ray in a couple of weeks and we will see if his lung re-inflated which I'm sure it has because he is having no trouble breathing. 🐇🐰😃
