Male Rabbit Has Puffy Eyes and Peeling Nose Skin.

Hi

this morning i noticed that one of our male rabbits has some puffiness and some discharge coming from the eyes. He is acting sick, and not too good. there is no other swelling anywhere else, just around his eyes. There is some creamy discharge from the eyes tho. he has only taken a few bites of food this morning. i don't know much, but would oxbow critical care do any good?

If Myxomatose is anywhere in your region, quarantine this rabbit from all others as soon and as far away as possible. Do chores around him last, desinfect, change clothes, avoid contact with any of the rabbits. Keep an eye on all other rabbits.

It might be something else, but that is one of the first signs of Myxo too, if it's that there is no time to waste anymore.
I hope that's false alarm, but I had an outbreak once and didn't really realize what was going until it was almost too late, had one sole survivor.

If critical care doesn't do any good, it doesn't hurt either. Keeping them eating is always good.

Yes, it is very contagious. No, there is no supplement. I do not know what a vet could try to ease symptoms, but without vaccination chances are slim.

Having a vet check asap what it is would be a good idea.

Ok. this morning i saw one of our rabbits get in with our sick male, for a few minutes, and i am wondering if that quick contact will spread to our other rabbit.

You really need to get this rabbit to a knowledgeable rabbit vet right away. If it is myxo, prompt treatment with systemic antibiotics and anti inflammatories is needed to have any chance of saving your rabbit, though even then the chances aren't good.

But if it's an eye infection, treatment needs to be started right away to prevent it from damaging the eye itself. Your rabbit will need to be put on antibiotic eye drops, possibly systemic antibiotics and an anti inflammatory(meloxicam), and because he's not eating much on his own he'll need to be syringe fed every 4-6 hours.

Hey all,

I have a male rabbit that is not looking good. He is really puffy around his eyes and is really snotty/matted fur around his nose. Yesterday I noticed that he had some flaky/peeling skin by his nose too. It does not seem like he is in pain at all, just kinda hard to get comfortable. I had discussed with @Preitler that it may be a case of myxo.

Any help is welcome.

That rabbit indeed appears to be suffering. The advice you had before still applies. This rabbit NEEDS a vet. He has gone too long with this condition.

Only advice I can give is to keep him quarentined from any other rabbit and see a vet ASAP.

Are his ears or their base puffy or swollen too, or privvy parts? Discharge is not a good sign, if it is Myxo the infection will go deeper and make breathing more and more difficult, and it wouldn't be a good sign anyway even if it were something else.
I don't know how long it took for my rabbits get to this stage, I was in the US for 3 weeks when it happened, came home to about 1/3rd of my herd more or less sick, getting worse and spreading over the course of a few weeks.

If you have other rabbits absolutly see a vet to be sure what this is, if it is Myxo and you can't keep up strict quarantine, best someone else caring for this boy who doesn't come in contact with other rabbits, imo a decision needs to be made. Even if it isn't Myxo - this is not a healthy rabbit.
The spread of Myxo isn't as obvious as with RHD where rabbits drop dead within a few days, with Myxo it can take quite some time to show symptoms. If I had a rabbit that looks like that again he would already be pushing daisys since I don't have the means to risk waiting for the outcome. Every day all other rabbits are at risk, and it might only show after weeks when it is too late.

Weeks before my herd was infected I found a wild rabbit on the paintball field, eyes swollen shut, but still moving. I had no idea that something like Myxo even existed back then.

If you raise rabbits and cost is an issue, it's understandable. Medical treatment isn't likely to be cheap, but an immediate decision is needed for the sake of the suffering of this rabbit. Either seen by an experienced rabbit vet immediately and put on a rabbit safe antibiotic, antibiotic eye drops, and meloxicam (NSAID), and/or whatever other treatment is needed, or have him humanely euthanized to stop his suffering.

Because he's survived this long, there is a chance he could make it even if this is myxo, but usually the meds are needed to prevent/treat the likely secondary infections that occur and help minimize the pain/discomfort he must be feeling.

You should tell them that this could be an emergency and your rabbit could possibly have myxomatosis. A good rabbit vet will try and fit you in, based on it being a possible emergency, or try and direct you to somewhere that can get your rabbit seen right away.
