Hello, Im havingsome problems w/ my holland lop lyla, shes about 8 weeks old, i have atrof like feed dish one side for pellets the other side for hay, theproblem is she likes to use the side for hay as a potty ive moved itall around and she still uses it. what can i do?

thank you for any advice.

Welcome gjsara,

I'd get a hay rack and use a small bowl for her food.

It could lead to more serious problems if she eats the hay that she's urinated in.

Eight weeks old kit should probably still be with Mama, but seeing as how you do have her already, I would agree with Carolyn.

Might be an excellent time to introduce her to a litter box with anappropriate litter, to not include clumping, clay based cat litter, which can be eaten and cause death; or cedar shavings, which induceskin reactions and respiratory infections.

Thank you for your advice this morning iwoke upand was getting ready for work and lyla started attacking herroom mate, they have been together since i brought her home, so i dontunderstand the sudden change in her behavior.so i had to buya new cage it is the same style but this cage came w/ somthing toprevent her from going potty in her food. and she seems to be doingbetter. also i bought her when she was six weeks old from the pet storewas that a problem??? i took her to the vet he said she was fine?

thank you

My boys started fighting like that. In themorning they were perfectly fine together, and within the next 2 hoursthey were fighting to kill eachother. I didn't understand it either, but they were just not destined to get along I guess. My boys have nowbeen permanently separated since January.

Generally speaking, rabbits should remain with their mothers until at least 8 weeks.

That's one of the many things that infuriate me about petstores. Theyseparate them from their mothers too early. I wonder how old they hadgotten the rabbit if you had bought it at 6 weeks. Many take them awayfrom their mothers at 3-4 weeks old. There's no way either of youshould have been sold a rabbit at such a young age.

If you get a healthy one, consider yourself lucky.

I can't stand petstores. Personally, I would never buy a rabbit fromanyone other than a reputable breeder or get one from a shelter.

I didn't know this when I got my Mocha. I thought6 weeks was the time to sell them. Had I known it was 8 weeks then Iwould have refused to take Mocha for another 2 weeks. Spice lived withhim mom for 10 weeks or more so he had it fine.

Sorry to go off.

It's just so unfair and cruel to the animals.

I know more horror stories than I know of happy turnouts. Perhaps there is One or Two out there that's good.

I beg to differ,

most breeders wean the kits between six and eight weeks. I wean thekits at six weeks but leave them together for two weeks till they areat least eight weeks old. In N.Y.S. the Ag. and Marketing law statesthat rabbits cannot be sold until they are eight weeks of age. [TwoMonths] Most breeders sell when they are 12 weeks so that they have abetter idea of the type the rabbit is or may express. I frown onPetshops because they want kits as young as any rabbit raiser will letthem go. They want them tiny and cute. They do not care if they dropdead the day after you've made your purchase. A breeder has morerespect for their rabbits and offspring. I am glad your rabbit did sowell. Best of luck in the future. Just because rabbits arelittermates does not mean they will get along. It would be best to Spayand or neuter the rabbits before trying to house them together. JMPO.

ok ok sorrry to cause so much discontent! thelady at the pet store (the pet store is locally owned) buysthem from a holland lop breeder in town . the women who helped me thatday was kind of um how should i say unknollegeable, because i used tohave mini lops so when i went in i was looking for a mini lop. becausei thought they were the smallest lop eared rabbit i quickly found outthat wasnt the case . well right as you walk in the door there is ahuge pen w/ tiny! babie bunnys (i would say about two litters of them, plus some dwarf hotots about a litter of those. so i wasimmeaditly drawn to those but i looked at the sign it said holland lopsi tought they got really big so i quickly moved on. then i found themini lops and the looked full grown to me they didnt look young at all.so finally the women came out to help me and i asked the age of themini lops she said 8 weeks and then i mentioned thehollands and she explained they were actullay smaller thenthe mini lop when they are full grown , she said that they would get tothe size of the mini lops that they had right now, so i asked how oldthe hollands were and she said she thought they were the same age butshe wasnt sure ive had my bunny for a couple of weeks and she is stilltiny no where near the size the women said.so im not sure really howold she is. but since ive goten her i have been doing as much reserchas i can i found out alot about general care for bunnys butnot really to much about holland lops personalitys.

hi gjsara,

No apology necessary.

There's a reason why they made it a lawin New York about notseparating the babies until 8 weeks old. 'Things that makeyou go: Hmmmm.'

"Beware of False Prophets."Some 'backyard rabbitbreeders' (also known as Rabbit Raisers)call themselves 'breeders'. You'll rarely find a rabbitraiser admitting that he's irresponsible and nothing short of areputable breeder. Unless you've seen their operation or havegotten reliable references, I'd put little stock in what they tell youthey are.

With how consciencous you are about the care of your little ones, I'mconfident that they'll have a happy, loving, healthy, and fulllives. I'm have little doubt that they'll have a want in theworld while in your care.

I got my rabbits when they were about 6 weeksold. I did get them from a breeder that was very knowledgeable andcared a lot for her rabbits. They were already weaned and separatedfrom their mother (because she wasn't allowing them to eat). So, whenit is a breeder, sometimes itisallrightto take home a 6 week old kitas long as it is weaned from the mother.

I do agree that pet shops aren't the place to buy rabbits. Most of thepeople thereare very inexperienced with rabbits andknowvery little about the breed, age, and sex of the rabbitsthey have. The best places to buy rabbits are from experienced breedersand (usually) animal shelters.

Good luck with your little one gjsara!

gjsara,

Keep in mind that rabbits breed as young as 4 months. It doesn't matter to them whether it's a brother or sister.

MyBunnyBoys' first response to you in this thread is deserving of consideration with regards to your two.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing pictures of your babies. :)
