HELP! My dutch/mix rabbit, Gabe will NOT stop digging in her litter box and my cats litter box.
I know, I know, digging is very natural for rabbits, but it's just really...destructive! I live in a tiny apartment with NEW carpet and she'll start digging and throw all of her pee soaked litter and feces all over her cage and my carpet. It's gross and it's also very loud. After the litter is dug out of her box she pulls the box off the side of the cage and throws it around.
I don't know how to stop this behavior! She's done it every day this week. She may just be under stimulated but I try to keep lots of fun things like little plastic cat toys, wooden things, & hay in her cage but she STILL wants to dig and throw her litter box around. I also let her and her partner in crime out every day for over an hour. That's another problem there because then when she's out she'll get in my cats liter box and dig around it in too! yuck. I've tried using deterrents in the litter box but I DO want her to use it.
I'm wondering if neutering will help? Her friend is neutered and he has fabulous potty manners. But, he always did!
I don't know what to do to stop this annoying and destructive behavior!
thanks,
Leine

getting fixed definitely helps with potty habits

is there a way to gate off the cat box from the bunny but not the cat? maybe something that the cat's willing to jump over but the bunny isn't?

a grid in the litterbox so that the bedding can't actually be reached might also help... though there's no guarantee since she might just start throwing the box around right away, heh.

Lately I've been just moving the cat litter box. I guess I could try a grate, I've used a grated litter box with my other rabbit, James, before. It only worked for a while before he realized that he could rip the grate out -_-
Thanks!

Neutering has helped with Howie. At 7 years old he was given a litter box for the first time. He would dig, dig, dig. The digging is just once every week or two now. His surgery was 3 weeks ago.

Good Luck!
