Hi, once again Winston is licking the fur off of my Beautiful Vega's face. Is their anything I can put on it that will stop him from licking her. Separating them is not an option, I will not break their bond and I don't have the room.

Any suggestions would be helpful. He's licking it now that it's looking raw. I'll try to get a picture of my Beauty.

Susan:?

If this isn't the correct spot for this can a Mod move it please.

Hey Susan...

It doesn't look red or irritated...he seems to be over grooming.
Tucker and Portia are going through the same thing right now.
Portia's bald all around her one eye...and he chewed her eyelashes off...
It is a phase and usually wears off...
I've noticed all our males are freaking out a bit for some reason...
I'm predicting an early spring! lol :)

I don't know what you could put on it that wouldn't annoy Vega when she grooms herself...I personally...if it were me...would wait and see if Winston stops on his own...if the skin is raw or irritated...you'll def have to do something about it...
The vet would have access to a topical treatment sort of like bitter apple that would taste bad...but again...when Vega washes her face....

Is there anything you could add to their area that might distract him?
A new toy or something that might catch his attention??

Hi Susan. I work at a shelter and they had this issue with a bonded pair. As Danielle mentioned, bittering agents work great for this. I would have to say that the bitter taste when she self grooms is less of a threat than incorporating some injury from her ferociously clean partner! Put a little on a cloth and gently apply on the face, away from the eyes as much as you can.

Good luck! Let us know if it works!

Thanks Dani & Emily. Now where can I get this bitter apple stuff. Her poor little face/head is really getting irritated now, very red. I'm a little worried about putting this stuff on her as it may sting her.

Like I said I can't separate them as I have no room and I will not break their bond.

I really don't have time to take her to the Vet. I'm up at 5:30 amhome around 6:00 pm. I have to get their dinner ready then mine, Let them out to play, clean their cages....then bedtime for me.

How about Bag Balm? or Vaseline? would either of these 2 help?

Thanks

Susan:?

Bitter Apple is availble at the pet store now isn't it?

Vaseline is useful for bunns with chronicly weepy eyes...helps to seal the skin to keep it from getting irritated...what you need is something to keep Winston form grooming the area...something that will turn him off.
