Hey everyone!!!! I just took my girl Mabel in to get spayed today. Procedure went great and I was very impressed with the doctor. She was living with a neutered male until today. I seperated their x pen down the middle with NIC panels so she can recover. Im worried that he is not taking well to this transition...I dont want to break their bond but it is best to keep them seperated correct? Also...their main cage is in our basement its two x pens attached together and they have a corner in the kitchen with a litter box that they use as home base when they are running around. They usually love it in the basement bc it is a bit cooler...but Im starting to get paranoid about her recovery...should I move her someplace warmer tonight? thanks for the help....just a worried owner here :)

oh my the research that i did before i had mine spayed. sorry for the long post

your NIC setup should be fine, but it is very important to make sure she is warm and laying on the softest material you have available. i kept mine separated for about 1.5 days. my male was very restless to get to the female, but i let her decide when she was ready.

MOST MOST MOST importantly, you gotta get her eating. when you go the vet, pack some of her pellets, her favorite veggies, treats, hay; whatever you can do to get her to eat. the vets office should try to get her to eat as soon as they get her out of surgery.

keep her warm, dry. try to use a ceramic dish for water since she most likely not going to want to have to work at getting it from a bottle. surround her with her favorite veggies, fruits, treats. i waved hay around in front of my females face until she got irritated enough to bite on one to get it out of her face, but she started eating it. she eventually started to come out and stretch and then it was noticeable that she was getting anxious also. so i watch them for whole first day to make sure the surgical site was not messed with and she took it slow, but they are pretty good at their own pain management. Metacam (ask your vet) is very necessary for a spay, it will help her get up and running sooner. also i would suggest making sure your vet will be using internal stitches and glue to the surgical site. less likely they will be able to pull out the stitches.

hope that helps.

I just had my little girl spayed a month ago and we were advised to keep her confined and low key for ten days....if I were you, I would keep them in the set up you described and then put them together when the 1 days are up. With your awesome set up, they can see and smell each other. I don't think the risk of injury is worth it. So happy for you that all went well...good luck!!!

thanks for the comments!!! everything is going great! The doc sent some meds home and she has been taking them pretty easily. She is trying to snuggle chester through the cage. He seems to be more on edge than she is...Odd...I will try to keep them separate for awhile. What happens if he breaks his bond with her? She is so sweet and she keeps putting her nose through the cage for him to lick. They used to spend hours cleaning each other...He doesn't seem to have the same snuggle mentality now that they are apart.

As long as there isn't any humping or chasing going on, I don't see how putting them together would be a problem. I got my female spayed, and put her back in with her neutered bonded buddy, the same day I brought her home. There wasn't any humping or anything going on, and she was just fine. I would be concerned about keeping a bonded pair separated for too long, and upsetting the bond.
