Arg! Toodles was being so naughty today! He ran outside into the doogie run while I was doing "poopie duty"!

He is an inside kitty, only. I am probably over reacting, but what are the risks to Juju being outside in the doggie run for an hour each weekend? Do I need to worry? I know that outside kitties need to have their shots 1x's a year, but inside kitties get them every 3 years. Will he get any illnesses?

Oh, and there is no way for him to escape from the dog run, it has a roof on it and a wire floor under the sand.

Let's see if I can post the video correctly...

I can't say for sure, but I would think he's fine. We've known people with barn cats who never get shots! they're too wild.....

Also, I think shots - as long as they get them - keep them more immune to some things than what we know. He's not getting out where a bunch of wild animals are and you keep it clean, so I think as long as it's that way - he's going to enjoy that time!

If it were up here, I might worry more (and I really don't think I'd worry) because of the temps and molds and cold-weather illnesses they can get.

Now, that's just my opinion - a vet might tell you different. (However, my sis used to work for a vet and he said shots generally do cover for longer than a year or two)

I think the t hing t hat would concern me the most is that once he gets a taste for the outside he might always try to run out on you. Like when opening the front door and escape on you one time.

That is what I worry about and it wouldn't be good for him to be outside here...wild animals. I could never have an outside kitty...I would worry so much.

ETA: Did you guys here him say "MAAAAMA"?

LOL! I swear at the end of the video he says "NO" LOL!

He's a gorgeous boy!

on the note of wanting out....... I think they do sometimes act that way but it's a good thing you have the dog run.... just so he doesn't try to get out other ways. Are you on a road that's really busy?

Diesel tries to get out the door and we stop him..... it's not fun!

Nope, we aren't on a busy road at all. He always shows no interest in going out the back door, the door we always use to go outside.

I'll probably play it safe and let the outside in the doggie kennel thing be a "once in a while" thing :p.

Seriously, dont. Its not difficult to stop a cat going outdoors. If he tries to get out put him in the run - whatever the weather. Rain, wind, sunshine, anything. Let him be in there for as long as he wants, no harm if he enjoys it ;)
One thing to keep track of is flea/mite treatment. Mite's like to live in sand...He we also soon start to enjoy climbing as a guess :p

Nah, I'll just keep my Juju inside :p. I'd rather be safe. I also do not use chemicals on my pets, so flea meds are out of the question. I am currently researching natural flea control for our dog.

Natural treatment. I have been using natural for all our pets since I can remember, ours go out everyday on the garden and not had any real problems yet.

Well, it looks as though I do not have a choice if I want Juju outside or not. He has learned to go outside through the doggie door and into the dog kennel . He has been sneaking out all night....and who knows how many other times since I posted this thread. I think once he knew what was outside and that he was safe out there, he just decided it was something he'd like to do more often.

:nonono:

At least the only time he can go out there is when we are home. When we are not home, Sammy goes into his NIC cage that is inside the house, where he can go out through the dog door, like this....

So, when Sammy is locked in there, Juju can't get in. I feel better knowing he can only go outside into the outside kennel when we are home.

I just worry! I don't want him to get sick or something from being outside. It's dangerous outside for a kitty :lookaround.

I think it would be good for him!

It's just like giving bunnies "playpen" time.

My cats have been inside/outdoor cats, and they have never tried to run away, and Juju won't either.

He knows he gets food and protection at home, and I think the outdoor stimulation would be great for him.

We just shake the treat bag whenever we want ours to come back in, and they come running in.

Well, he goes through the doggie door and into a 6ft by 4ft dog kennel. He is safe from anything trying to eat him and he can not get out, as it is very tightly covered.

I do not like the idea of outdoor kitties, but at least I feel better knowing he can't be run over or eaten by coyotes.

Now, to worry about our new kitty when we get him next Saturday. He is 3 months old and a ball of fire.

Let me warn you this:
Once you let an indoor cat outdoors, he'll want to go out more and more and more.
Our indoor cat, Trey, was a perfectly wonderful housecat until one day I thought it would be fun to take him inside to play. From then on, we would have to rush in/out the front door because he'd try to escape, and we had to watch him constantly. He yowled by the door and always wanted to go outside.
Then, we started letting him outside, and two things happened-
1) he got attacked by a tomcat (poor guy... had to get 28 stitches!)
2) he got hit by a car, which is how he died.
Then I REALLY wished I'd never taken him outside.

I know I'm in a completely different country, and we do things a lot different here, just wanted to say that it STILL amazes me when people keep cats indoors only . Over here you keep a kitten indoors and slowly teach it to start going to the toilet outside when it's about 10 weeks old, and pretty much just let them come and go as soon as they go toilet outside with a 100% success rate.

I've always done that with my cats until Brewster, where I've tried to keep more of an eye on her, she does still spend a few hours outside a day and she does most of her toileting out there.

I can't get the video to play for some reason :pullhair:! GRRRRRR!

He goes through the dog door and into a COMPLETELY covered dog kennel that is cat proofed and dog proofed. Juju is bigger than the dog, so he certainly will not be sneaking out any which way...not possible. Kitties can't get to him, he can't get to kitties (we only have 1 neighborhood cat, anyway). Juju does not run for an open door.

I can't do anything about it, anyway. I can't block off the dog door because then our dog would be using our house as a toilet. We adopted him, but as a puppy he must have only been raised to go outside through a dog door because he does not alert us when he has to outside by going to the door or anything.

Anyway, Juju has been outside all morning. I'm really not happy about this AT ALL, but we don't have a choice :(.

Sammy's NIC cage is hilarious! I lol'd when I saw it. As for Juju, I wouldn't worry about him going into the dog pen. He's enclosed and safe. Besides, keeping a cat inside when it doesn't want to be is pretty darn hard!

Thanks, Diana! Man, he sure does LOVE going out there. He will go outside for a few minutes, come back inside, bother me and act like he has done something wrong, then run through the house and back outside. He is soooo funny!

Oh, by the way....did you get your hammocks and Star Dome Homes for your ratties :D?

Haha, Kagome yells at me when she comes in from outside, as if it's my fault she ran out there! No, I haven't received the beds and hammocks, yet. Mail from the States takes forever!
