well, i am thinking that izabelle's URI has progressed into full out pneumonia. her breathing isn't terribly labored at this point, but it is weezy almost. she is currently on .2 ccs of baytril after being switched from .03 ccs of a sulfur (i think) based antibiotic.

she is eating and drinking like normal, and i am still giving her pedialyte daily although i have stoped with the nutrical as she isn't skinny anymore. . .

i have to work untill thur. so she will have to wait for a vet appointment until then. . .

just wanted to let ya'll know

aww poor little girl. Is there no improvement with the baytril? If its pretty bad, maybe ask your vet about nebulizing. We did that for Max when he had bronchitis and it worked great. We used a mix of mucomyst, sterile saline, and gentamycin.

Keep us posted. I'll be keeping her in my prayers.

Haley

PS. Now that the forum is open, Im gonna move this to the infirmary.

Aww poor baby girl...

Ive heard of putting them in the bathroom when you take a shower, so they breathe in the steam. I dont know if that would work in her case, but worth a shot. Also ive heard of using Vicks, I don't know how, but im sure someone else will....

I hope she fights through and gets better <3

Good point Phinnsmommy, I bought a vaporizer and it seemed to help. Buy some vicks vaposteam to put in the medicine cup and it creates a nice steam. Max used to sit in front of it to breathe better.

Can you get a steamer and use some eucalyptus? That was recommended to me when I had my little baby foster with an upper respiratory infection.

What about going to an injectable antibiotic?

thanks everyone for the advise! it is really going to help

i am going to try the steamer thing. . . i am unsure about the showers as both myself and my roommate take hot showers and the temp change between were her cage is and the bathroom during the shower might be enough to aggrivate her symptoms even more (the moving from cool, to hot, back to cool).

on a happy note she is growing her fur back! she has a nice little peach fuzz on her bald spots. . . so we will see!

oh, and thanks haley for moving it, i swear i was in the infirmary when i post this. . . must not have been!

We used the shower one with Ringo when he was bad used to help alot.

Poor Izabelle. I hope she feels better soon. Maybe she needs a different antibiotic.

The steamer sounds like a great idea. You can start with just the eucalyptus or Vicks, but also talk to your vet about using it to deliver meds like Haley did. It's a good way of getting medicines directly to the source of the problem.

Lots of love for her!

Shower steaming is a great way to help with URI's. It is really common for pet rats to get URI's...and this method works really well for them.

When my rat (now passed on) had a URI...she was on her Baytril, but I would also take her into the bathroom everynight for a shower steam, then rub a touch of Vick's vapor rub above her nose.

It gave her some relief and helped her. If I had not done the steaming/Vapor rub along with the Baytril, then I think she would have died.

How's Izabelle tonight?

I do hope she's doing better.

sas :?

she is doing a little better.

i had her out running around and running doesn't seem to aggrivate it. . . which personally i take a great thing. i am going to get the vaporizer from my mom in the next day or 2, and get her into the vet (hopefully) on thursday. . .

everything seems to be bunnies, bunnies bunnies right now. . . we got iza sick, herman fighting the ear infection, zooka is now 5 months old and hormonal as all heck, and for the next 10 days we have a holland lop named bella staying with us while her bunny daddy is out of town (one of the most well behaved rabbits i have ever seen. . . i will get some photos soon!). . . our house is full! plus with working A LOT (i am 1/2 thru a 8 days in a row again), my sister's wedding in under 2 weeks (with the 300 guest list at the reception) i am feeling a little stressed. . . and not seeing iza getting better was putting the top on the cake.

she isn't weezing as bad today, it is still there. . . but she is eating, and drinking, and playing (we bought new tinkle toys so we are excited), she is sneezing like mad. . . and going into coughing fits. . . thankfully she is only getting her meds now, i have her off the pedialyte and the nutrical (but keeping them close at hand). . .

Glad to hear she's a little better :)

Lets hope for a full recovery though ;)

Im sorry to hear about you being so stressed. I know you might not have very much time, but getting into a nice hot bath and just relaxing helps alot, or you can spend time reading, lol.

Those are just a few things I do when I feel stressed :)
