Most of my buns get a damp nose when they get hot or excited. Is this normal? (I would presume so given that it's not just one bun)

Badger tends to get a damper nose than others, it's not actively running, or snotty or streaming or anything, just a tad damp, and it is always damper on one side. He's always had this since we've had him. He doesn't cough, or sneeze, or wheeze or anything at all.

When he was neutered he had a full check and the vet said he was ok, but he obviously didn't have a swab or anything done. He also had his jabs and stuff and had no problems with them and was given a clean bill of health for each one.

So worth a trip? He's fine otherwise no problems at all other than he is REALLY moulting and his new favourite habit is making me eat his fur.

(I'm such a worried bunny mum about everything, especially noses. My Flash had an activelystreaming nose, and even though it was clear discharge he lost his life the same day)

The Snuffer occassionally will have a damp nose. I don't worry about it. His paws aren't ever wet or damp. He sneezes every once in awhile when grooming. I don't worry about that either as it's most likely hair in his nose since he's been shedding for months, he just finally finished, geez.

Just keep an eye on it. Make sure the paws aren't wet. If you feel unsure at all, of course-off to the vet;).

No,the paws aren't wet at all.It really is just a slight dampness.

Like I say, I'm just concerned after Flash. Mind you, he didn't have damp paws either.

Maybe I'll ask for them to do a swab when they check him over for his next vaccination.

Oh, and thanks for the reply. :) I should have said that first, but I'm not thinking too clearly, lol, I never think clearly when I'm thinking about Flash.

:) He's due his myxi now, I'm just waiting on quotes for 14 rabbits having 23 vaccines between them, lol.

So that won't be too long in the future.

Thanks Crystal

I talked to the vet about this yesterday.

He wants to have him in in the new year to do a full workup. The running on one side can indicate molar problems on that side. He said they will have a good look and maybe do some x-rays depending on what they see, and will also look at doing a tear duct flush, and also do some bloods and swabs.

Looks like I was right to be aware of it, and barring no emergencies, Badger will be having all that done in the new year. Aw, poor Badger boy.

I hope he's ok!

The only times when I've really had an issue with a runny nose, it's been from seasonal changes, allergies and such.

Other times buns have gotten damp noses for no reason, and they come and go, like Badger.

For a while I thought Bailey might have had molar issues too, due to a runny eye that seemed to have no cause, but he doesn't so it's very confusing.

I'm going to bring this back up because I have noticed that Tony gets a damp nose..... and I hate saying damp really - it's more like he has a tiny bit of dampness on his nose sometimes. Just enough to feel it if he happens to touch my cheek or something.

I think it's just when he's excited or happy but I worry about everything!

Anyone else have an opinion on this?

My Vitto's nose gets dump when he's hot, mainly when I turn up the heating system during wintertime and not so much at summer, despite all the heat waves we get here during June-July. I used to worry at first, but he doesn't wheeze or sneeze, his eyes are always perfectly clear and his nose is not watery, it's not even visible when I look at his face, just a bit dump sometimes, when he touches me.

I guess it's due to the heat? In order to combat the dry environment in his room due to heating, I put a bowl of water to evaporate on the radiator.

I'll try that. He's in the coolest room in the house and then I bring him into the middle of the house. maybe that's why?

He's healthy too, and like you, I can't see it.

He gets to go for his good bunny checkup soon. I want him weighed and stuff before 4H starts. I'll mention that to her and make sure she checks him over really good.

Thanks :)

If your vet has an opinion on what causes the damp nose, please kindly do tell me, because I don't have any rabbit specialists here to ask...

Thanks/Marietta

damp eyes i am familiar with/blocked tear ducts/dental,,however,.damp nose/variances of dampness may be indicative of an upper respiratory problem/keep the baytril handy,..the environment in which the rabbit is housed/or lives maybe a problem,..sincerely james waller

How is Badger doing now, Tracy?

Get this, girl! I might post this on the main forum, but for now, I want to wait til I call the vet tomorrow who may deal with Wildlife Rehab. I saw a wild bun tonight fall and rollover, get up rollover. Try to get up, rollover. I was freakin out. I called multiple places, the ones I got ahold of said they'd just "put them down" in that condition.:pssd: So, I'm gonna try some more places tomorrow, on a weekday, to see if I can get someone to help this bunner.

Hubby told me tonight, after the fact, that he's seen this bun in front of our bushes grooming and fall over.:X Tonight, what I saw, was bad. Like EC or something. Not sure what rehabbers will do for a wild ec bun though.:( Here's hoping!;)

Aw, that's sad. Poor bunny. I suspect they might just PTS, but definitely better that than being caught by a predator. It's so sad when you see wildlife struggling so much and can only help on a minimal level. That bun is lucky you are looking out for it. Let us know what happens in the end and if anyone can help.

Badger is fine :) He has had a set of spurs since this long forgotten thread was written, lol, but other than that, he's been great. He still has a damp nose when he gets excited, but that's all, nothing sinister :)

So glad Badger is doing well!:)

Thanks as far as the wild bun. I know what you mean. Hubby after the fact told me that he's seen the bun up front in the bushes and it often cleans and falls over.:( So, it's been awhile with this bun. I suspect EC, and I'm sure no habbers will treat a wild one with it.:(

I was reading this thinking it was current :)and starting to talk about damp noses with or without exertion
I worry about damp noses even if the discharge is clear. I am glad this isn't current.

Tracy was the dampness on one side related to his molars or was it nothing.?

The falling over wild bunny could have raccoon roundworm; I would not try to catch him yourself but call animal control. this is a hopeless situation and the bun would need to be PTS.Wild buns have all kinds of parasites; I would not touch a sick one without wearing gloves
