Hello, I am brand new to this forum. I have gotten lots of info about bunnies from other sites but want to join up here.
I rescued my bunny 4 weeks ago. Yes, I personally rescued her out of my parent's rose bush. My dad had noticed her cowering under the bush on Friday and she was still there Saturday when I did my laundry, so I went and told my husband she was going to die if we didn't rescue her. We went and got our pet carrier and lured her into it w/ some carrots. We then drove to the pet store and got a cage and supplies.
That monday I went to the vet's for a checkup. I told the vet I didn't know anything about rabbits, but she didn't tell me any info at all, didn't even discuss fleas even when I said I had cats; or any vaccinations--I had to look it up online to learn that none are required. So I felt it was a waste of $80 and an hour, but I learned my little Chestnut is a girl and is about 2-3 years old. She is most likely a Dutch rabbit.
We brought her inside and she is living in our office. She has her cage as her burrow and we built her a "play pen" out of wire shelving. She didn't like hay at first, only wanted to eat pellets, but she quickly learned that the pellets were being rationed. I don't want any fat lumbering rabbits! So she is eating 3 good handfuls of hay/day now (so proud) and 2 cups of veggies as well as 1/4 cup pellets.
My cute Chestnut litter trained herself! I noticed after 3 days she would urinate in only one spot so I got a plastic shoe box for $1 and cut the sides down so she could hop in and out easier. She contains all her droppings in it and I empty it twice a day at feeding time.
There is a draft in the office from the exterior door, so I splurged recently and bought Chestnut a fleecy cat bed. She loves stretching out in it and using the sides as a pillow. She is very cute and loves to chew up toilet paper rolls. I keep trying out different kinds of toys on her but she doesn't seem to know how to play with them. She took a while to get used to me, but allows me to pet her now. She is my first rabbit and my husband and I are officially "full" of pets! We have 4 cats and now the bunny, so that's it! We are moving the empty aquarium to the garage so I don't get tempted and get some fish too...
P.S. Don't reply and say that this cage is too small! She has free access to her "play pen" which is 4x bigger, so don't fret about it, please.
