This is a water downed cencored verson of what I truely wish to say. This will not be able to show my real feelings however I feel I must tell someone.

How is it possible to feel rage, sadness and !@#$%^&%^&* at the same time? So today I called Pennyroyal, a vet in lexington that has rabbit-savvy vets. I had them call Adams because he told the girl to tell me yesterday he did not no the proper dose to give Z. The vet from there called me and said they had used it before and could tell him how much to give. I call and the girl tells me Adams does know how much to give so I explain what i was told YESTERDAY. She goes and talks to him and you know what the #%^&*( he says? After telling me yesterday to bring Z in he says he will not see Z. OMG, the rage sprang up in me! Apparently since yesterday at 6 PM he had decided he was not doing anything but livestock and dogs anymore. I was so mad I hung up on them and could not stop crying.

How the *crap* can a vet refuse to see a sick, possibly dying, animal? He makes me sick and I hope he pays in one form or another. I do not believe in hell but if there was one he better end up there.

While I was trying to pull myself together mom called a vet we know, said vet has his own clinic and also works at the clinic with Adams, and asked if he treated rabbits. I called him about spaying/neutering some months back and he said he would not do it as he has never done it but he said today he does treat rabbits. A vet that actually knows their limits, awesome. So mom hands me the phone and I explain what is wrong with him, what he needs, what happened with Adams and if he is willing to give Z the medicine and he said yes. I started crying :blushan:We are taking him tomarrow around 1 or so.

So now I am off to message Randy. I do not trust vets at ALL now so I want to know how much Z should get.

But now... well now I have no vet to spay Mousse. I swear, I can not win :(

Everyone keep Z in your thoughts please! He is doing well but seems a bit despressed.

Well the vet does seem incompetent.. but look at this way
it looks like you are going to be able to get the medication and maybe this new vet will talk to Randy.

Yes, this change to a new vet is for the best. I think this demonstrates how honesty and a willingness to learn and admit you don't know everything is the best quality in a vet.

There are people in all fields that are just like that. PErsnoally I use only those who come highly recommended. Our exotics vet is tremendous, and we have several others for various animals we have.

I've found it's important to talk to vets before you need them..... about everything!

I took Z and the vet was very nice. He is a little behind on the times but totally listened to me. He said he did have an ear infection, "It is very deep". I showed him the video and explained how it all happened and what I had been doing since. He asked when the spinning and stuff stopped and if it has showed up any since. He went back to the medicines and said he was going to give him amoxicillin, I had not heard it, and mom looked at me and said amoxicillin. I kindly said rabbits are not to have Amoxicillin and he sit it down, tuned around, looked at me and said "Baytril then." and as he started to ask I said I could give injections. He did not seem mad by me telling him what he was about to do was bad, I thought he would be. He said kind of just to get it out there "I have gave Amoxicillin before" and then "I am going to put Prednisone in the Baytril" as he was getting it in the syringes. He injected the first one and handed me three, he said to give them 24 hours a part. I was worried about the prednisone but I read up on it. He also gave me some ear drops.

I messaged Randy and he did not think it was the best treatment. I have read up on all the medicines and decided what to do. I will keep you all updated on him, so far he is doing great.

Would this vet talk to Randy?

You said you knew what you were going to do so I gather that you are going to medicate yourself. Am I right?

This is a perfect example of a person who has educated herself on rabbits and SAVED ARABBITS LIFE in the process.

Amoxocillin is just so wrong >...............................

Good Job!!!

I did not even ask if if he would, mom told me basiclyI needed to tell him what happened and shut up and let him do his job. She said I would make him mad like I made Adams mad :rollseyes

I perfer not to say what I am going to do, if something goes wrong then it is my fault and I accept that. I am torn so I will try this and hope for the best, hope with me? If the medicines did not clash I would give what he gave me plus what I had been doing, but from what the links from the one site, that everyone on here links to, said it would be risky.

But anyway, I am going to get one of them ear checkers, I forgot to today. I wanted to get Z out of walmart as fast as I could so it totally slipped my mind.

I'm so glad you caught the Amoxocillin blunder. It could have been deadly otherwise.

Yes, oral amox is not ok for rabbits. It can be given by injection, however. I don't think the prednisone will be a problem. However, I'm not sure baytril will be strong enough to treat a very deep ear infection. Of course try it for a week or two, but if there is no improvement you may have to convince him to give you a stronger antibiotic.

I said I was not going to say what I was going to do but I might as well. He gave me enough baytril for today, satureday and sunday. After that I am going to start the bicillin back. The ear drops say to give twice a day for 7-10 days so I will decide how long and 2 days after they are stopped I will start the Metacam back for a few days. I am worried about him not having anythig for the swelling once the baytril/pednisone is stopped but apparently you are not suppose to give NSAIDs with steriods and it takes roughly two days for the steriods to leave the system. I do not know any of this for a fact but it must be true if that site linked to a page stating it.

Opinions?

NSAIDs can reduce inflammation and also swelling. If that's not enough, you could probably ice it. I have read that a low dose of prednisone with NSAID is ok (at least in humans). The risk is for ulcer and stomach damage, so I don't know what the risk of that is in bunnies. The vet definitely didn't give you enough baytril--most treatments require 10 days at the least and I think 14 is better.

I sympathize with you. I have had very bad vets in the past. I also worked for a great vet once and learned quickly that unfortunately there are more crappy docs out there than one would think.
But when you find a good one you stay with him for life! My vet now does everything from dogs to ferrets, rabbits and I even saw a skunk in the waiting room once!
You will find a good one. Get online, do some research, ask for recommendations from some of their clients. Even if it's an hour away it's worth the trip for emergencies.
Tell Z to get well soon I'm thinking of him :)

I only have a brief moment here so I wanted to expand on this topic. A couple of drugs prescribed here causes me great concern. The Amoxicillin thing is bad enough....but this drug can be used as an injectable but should be considered unsafe as an oral drug. Prednisone, a steroid, was prescribed as was Tresaderm which is an ear drop and a very powerful one at that. It contains Dexamethasone which isa steroid. Metacam, which is an NSAID....NON STEROIDAL Anti-inflammatory Drug was also prescribed.

First, the use of steroids and non-steroidals are always, without question, contraindicated. Call your personal doctor and ask about mixing those two. The manifestation of this contraindication is usually gastric ulcers. And with the pH in a rabbit's gut, I don't really want lesions thinning that wall. Not something I would want to happen.

Next, steroids suppress the immune response. Now if we have an infection, does it not stand to reason we would need the immune system to be active....not suppressed? Steroids have traditionally been used to suppress the immune system to reduce inflammation and pain....like with arthritis in humans. And as we all know, a rabbit's immune system is not exactly it's strong point....so if you have an infection already....why in the world would you want to suppress the immune system? Maybe I am confused but this line of treatment is without logic.

I totally understand. I dowant to let you know that the Metacam was not prescribed. I was giving it before I took him. I did ask for more Metacam while I was there, after we payed and leftI went back, but they where out. As soon as I got home I messaged you and then went to work researching what all the medicines where. That is when I found out the Metacam should NOT be gave with the steriods.

I am stuck and can only do the best I can. I trust you and what I read. In your opinion should I do what I was doing before and toss the medicine he gave me?
