I agree with Degrassi, once you do the water for a month or so, you won't want sweet drinks anymore. I used to drink a lot of juice, then I started working at my kid's school, doing childcare. I started carrying a big water bottle, so I drank a lot more water.
Now, I have to dilute my juice, because even the "pure" juice tastes too sweet!

I just listened to last night's news on podcast, and there was a story about the rise of kidney stones. It said the greatest increase was in young girls who ate lots of salt and didn't drink much plain water. (The doctor on the interview said he used to see 10 cases a year in kids, now he's seeing 5 every week.) They talked about fast food and pre-packaged food being full of sodium. Soda and energy drinks have lots of sodium, too, and replace plain water as a beverage.

This concerns me, as I've already mentioned I don't drink enough water because I don't usually feel thirsty. (I didn't mention- when I drink the recommended amount of water, 6 glasses, I am in the bathroom a LOT. Seriously, twice every 3 hours, sometimes more.)

Also, I am a salt addict. I don't care much for sweets, but I could eat salty things all day every day. I crave it like mad.

And, lately, I've been having some minor kidney pain. Last night, the aching was bad enough to keep me awake. :(

So, another reason to drink more water.

I'm big on drinking water now. Not by choice, by necessity as I've been having some health troubles of my own.

Out with the soda - plenty of water, and it is making an overall difference in my health both weight wise and for other medical reasons :)

For assorted reasons, I'm now looking into unflavored seltzer water. I am hoping I can purchase it for a similar price to what I currently pay for soda.
(Making my own isn't really an option.)

I drink plain and flavoured carbonated water now instead of soda and quite enjoy it. Its the same price as pop/soda, at least here anyways. I like it because its healthier(no sugars or sweeteners, low sodium) and it helps with the cravings for a pop/soda as its fizzy.

I think it might save me money in the long run.....Jason is really good about drinking soda, but not so good about buying soda. :X
I think he'll leave the plain fizzy water alone.

Thats not always the case. I buy the fizzy water for me and my mom. My dad started out not liking it and would leave it alone. But now he drinks it too and will drink most of it if we dont' hide it at the back of the fridge, lol. Its especially bad if my dad runs out of pop, then the fizzy water defnitely isn't safe.

Good point. Jason used to drink regular soda, but he kept "forgetting" to buy soda when he was out, and he started drinking my diet soda. I watch sales and stock up when soda is low, but I have to nag him to go buy some.

I LOVE TEA!!! Here we always have a nice big jug of homebrewed unsweetened decaf tea and it's always gone by nighttime! It's very good because it has lots of iron and the water is very good.
Another thing one can do is this: eggs. Storebought eggs have lots of calories because of hormones, etc. because they have to increase production so they can sell more, but good farm fresh eggs actually contain good stuff that will fight cholesterol and reduce your risk for heart disease. Just remember that fitness is a combonation of a good diet, and EXCERCISE. Even walking more can gradually make you healthier. Another way to get the ole muscles working better is to do more yourself. Instead of buying veggies plant a garden. It will be lots of work and you can benefit from the "fruits" of your labor!

If I had a yard, I would have chickens and a garden. :(

No I am still going to eat and change my eating habits also. But the doctor told me that The amount of suger and carbs I drink is the worst.

I drink easily 3 bottle pops a day Dr. Pepper, Rootbeer, And Pibb Extra are my 3 favorite. And another 2 cups of kool aide.

On top of that I drink about 4 to 5 cups a day of tea. And we like is very sweet. About 3 cups of suger for one gallon of tea. Yes I know thats a lot. That why he said even if I changed my drinking habbits I would most likly loose 30 pound from that alone.

And help my pancresis (sp) Start working normally again. I would not be so sick all the time like dissey and stuff. And not nearly as tired cause my body is always trying to figure out the suger.

I need to break the habit even if my health is not a huge issue now it will be soon.

I am at 297 # and I am only 5'6.

Best of luck to you - I have had type #1 diabetes for almost 20 years and I would not wish it on anyone!

I like my tea sweet, too - I use Equal but am trying Splenda as it is the most natural (so I am told) of the sugar substitutes.

My sister (not a diabetic but she is a social worker who counsels diabetics) went on a counting carb diet and she was amazed how she could lose weight yet have an occasional meal of ice cream and romaine lettuce as the carbs equaled her allotment. She felt she could more effectively counsel her patients if she knew what they were going through... especially since some were in shock that a meal of pasta was 1 cup - not what we grew up with!:nerves1

Best of luck and post your success and frustrations - this is NOT an easy thing to do! I am trying to cut aspartame out of my diet and go to water myself.

Kat, I'm glad you are starting to feel better! Isn't it strange how things can affect us and we would never suspect it?

Is the tap water where you are not good?
My tap water tastes a little weird, but I use a PUR water filter. It screws on the end of the faucet, and I just turn it up when the water is on to get filtered water. I also keep a Britta pitcher in my fridge so I have cold water whenever I want it.
My mom buys water, too, because she doesn't like the flavor of her tap water. Her grocery store has a water machine. The store sells empty 1- and 2-gallon jugs, and she just brings them back with her and refills them from the machine. It is much cheaper than buying bottled water, and it's just as good.

Of course, if I had been in your situation, I would probably have stopped to buy a bottle of water, too!

I also recommend getting a container, like an empty water bottle, so you can take water with you. Then, if you are going somewhere and think there won't be plain water for you to drink, just fill it up and take it with you. I take one with me wherever I go, and it encourages me to drink more water.

I bought about 4 jugs of water like there the smae thing as milk cartons. But they have water in it. I go refill them once a week if we run out i drink the tap but it taste horrible its safe to drink. According to the city but it taste different every day.

But that was a all day type day I had to help my sister then go to the party and go get storm after wards. Then go meet up with my bialogical mom. So I would of have to bring five bottles.

But it worked out we are getting one of those ozarka water thing soon. Where they deliever the water to your door. i already have the machine.
