hi. Couple weeks ago, my husbandbrought home a netherland dwarf baby rabbit home for us. Ifell in LOVE at first sight! We were dedicated to raisingher. Last week, we took her to a vet and the Dr. said shewasa perfectly healthy bunny. But the next day shepassed away! When I went back to the vet, the doctor guessedthat she had a viral disease that didn't show any symptoms. Iunderstood because my husband had bought her in Downtown, Los Angelesfrom a little girl. We were so devasted from the loss thatthis time around, we are looking for a bunny from a breeder or privatehome who really takes care of their rabbits, but I can't seem tofindanything around Los Angeles. Does anybody knowor have a Netherland Dwarf baby/junior rabbit looking for a GOOD homein the Los Angelesarea? Any help would be reallyappreciated. Thank you guys for your time.

I live in the LA area, and recommend checkingthe shelters, too. I don't know of many breeders in the area,but I can't recommend any of them, really. I would if Icould, though.

I'm so sorry to hear about your bunny. They usually sell them when they're too young in Downtown.
I definately reccomend you check the city shelters. Ipersonally volunteer at the East Valley Shelter (I spent about 3 hourscleaning every bunny cage there yesterday.) We also just gotin 15 unaltered rabbits form one family on Saturday. Most ofwhom had ear mites. They usually don't euthanize any rabbitsfor space reasons, but they were considering it just because of these15 which put their rabbit count in the shelter close to 50buns. The shelter will be, I think, closed next weekend sincethey're moving to a new facility a few blocks away, but they'll be openduring the week (closed mon. tuesday and thursday (8-7) wednesday andfriday (8-5) And open 11-5 on sundays and 8-5 on saturdays.
There are 2 bunnies there that I know are dwarves.Onespayed female and one neutered male. The femaleis being housed with a neutered male who it says is a dwarf, but Ithink may be at least part dutch.

Im not surprised it died it would have beenstill nursing.it was way too young too be away from its mother.im sorryi dont know anyone in your area.you should check the American rabbitbreeders association website and the American Netherland Dwarf Rabbitclub.I cant say what should happen too people that sell such youngbabies.bluebird

Yikes! That baby looks like it's only3 maybe 4 weeks old. Way too young to be away from mom, theyshould be weaned at 8 weeks at the earliest.

I would also suggest trying to find one at a shelter orrescue. So many bunnies need good homes, and there are justnot enough good homes to go around.
If you don't find one in a shelter or at a rescue, then go through ARBA(American Rabbbit Breeders Association) to try to find a reputablebreeder near you.

Thank you everyone for taking the time out topoint me in a direction. I've been looking into all the sitesand will keepyou guys updated. Its so sad howmanyabandoned rabbits are out there. Really, humansare the meanest of all species.
ps. the vet said CoCo was around 7 to 8 weeks!Really, what a horrible vet. She died the day after hechecked her out! I really need to do some research on a goodrabbit vet.

It is sad, isn't it. We were actuallytalking about those bunnies on saturday. They usually sellthem when they're like 3 weeks old. Same with theturtles. It's illegal to sell those turtles when they'reunder 4 in. in length because they carry salmonella that kids can diefrom. When the turtles and the humans get older, they fightit off.

And with a shelter rescue, it is usually oldenough where you KNOW what you are getting. So many pet stores offerdwarves that end up being anything but.
Sorry that your first bunny left so soon. I would definatly find a newvet. What I did was ask a shelter that offers spayed bunnies where theygo. I got a highly reccomended vet that I know has experience withbunnies.

Im so sorry for your loss. What a sweet little bunny. I agree, she looks way too young to be away from mom.
Try checking petfinder.com for bunnies in your area, you can search byzip code. A good thing about buying a shelter bunny also is that notonly are they older and more stable, they are usually alreadyspayed/neutered, which saves you a lot of money in the long run.

Excuse my calling her a boy from the start...we didn't knowher gender just yet at that point, hehe...she's a girly girl throughand through, though!)

But, yes, I completely second the shelter idea. You can get abun that's no longer in their teenagehood, that's alreadyspayed/neutered, and they'll help you find the bunny with the rightpersonality for you!

Ain't that the truth!! It's going tocost me $250 EACH to spay my girls... We're saving a littleat a time ($50/week) for our spays. Whereas you could get ashelter bun for about $60, and the bun's already spayed/neutered!
