For those of you who didn't know, I was attacked by 4 ninjas on the steps of the county courthouse on April 4. I kicked their butts...literally, and shattered my fibula in the process. My surgeon scolded me, telling me I didn't need to put my foot up their butts QUITE so far!
Um, ok, actually I fell down the 4 concrete steps at the county courthouse by making a misstep and doing a poor job in correcting that misstep with my other foot, crumpling up and ...well...down, and shattering the bone with multiple fractures. Hubby just likes the ninja story better.
The surgeon had to attach an8 1/2 inch plate in my leg along the fibula. It is held in place with 9 screws. 2 more screws are holding in other fragments of bone. There is a long screw going from the front to the back of my ankle to hold in broken pieces of the tibia. All of these are made of titanium and none of them will ever be removed.
Here are a few photos:
For two weeks I was pretty incapacitated. I never had any upper arm strength, and so moving myself around wasn't very easy. After that, I was put into a hard cast, but still no weight-bearing.
For four more weeks I wore the cast. Then I got it off, only to have it get put right back on. Today marks the end of another 2 weeks, making 8 weeks total in the cast.
Today I got the walking boot! I was surprised, because the main break (looks like an empty V shape between the parts of the bone up there), just doesn't look any different to me than the original x-rays. The doc says I'm ready, though. So, here I am in a walking boot. I'm certainly happy about it, if a bit apprehensive.
Over the next 4 weeks, I'm to build up the amount of weight I put on the foot until I'm ready to begin the process of learning to walk again. It's a good thing I'm not working this summer! I have a lot of work to do on myself and this healing process.
I just wanted to share my celebration of finally being able to put my foot down! ...literally... hehe
