Hello and welcome to the fun world of RATS :biggrin2:. Be careful that you don't get addicted and soon have to get two of your own ;).

First off, since Oscar is all alone and doesn't have a rat buddy, then you should spend a lot of time with him, as much as possible. It's as easy as putting down an old blanket over your bed and letting him run around on it while you are laying down on your bed watching television or reading a book. Lone ratties really thrive on human companionship, since they lack another rat as a companion.

You can learn how to "play" with Oscar by using toys (even free ones right in your house!), here:

Since Oscar is new to your house, you will expect some sneezing from him. This is called "new home sneezes" and it is nothing to worry about. However, if the sneezing continues for over a week with red stuff (porphryin) around his eyes and nose and he "wheezes" when he breathes, this is called a common "URI" (upper respiratory infection). Once a rat is showing those signs, he needs to be brought to the vet ASAP because a simple URI, turns into a bad URI, turns into pheumonia (sp?), which could lead to a death. Rats go downhill very quickly, so at the first signs of any illness, the rat should be brought to the vet for treatment.

As for food, I am not sure what "rat museli" is (since you are in NZ), but I am assuming it is a packaged rat food mixture? Rat food mixtures aren't the best for rats, but since he is used to this type of food, then it is best he stays on it. The best food for rats is a homemade grain mixture (cereals, pastas, oats, nuts, ect) while feeding along-side a high quality dog food or lab block.

You can read about homemade grain mixtures and learn what foods rats CANNOT have, here:
http://hubpages.com/hub/Homemade-Rat-Diets

Let me know if your friend would be interested in a list of ingredients for this type of mixture, I'd be happy to find out where she can find these things in NZ :).

As for fresh foods, is there a way for you to call your friend and ask her what types of fresh foods she was feeding him, how often, and how much?

If not, it is best to start off slowly, as to not upset his system if hasn't ever had certain types of food before.

Rats love:
plain (not seasoned) cooked meat (and the bones if there are any!).
veggies & fruits (see safe food list link above).
baby foods.
cooked rice.
cooked (not instant) oatmeal.
apple sauce.
scrambled eggs (crush up the shells while cooking the egg for added "crunch").
bread (wheat, white, ect) dipped in olive oil.
soy milk or rice milk (can be mixed in with the eggs, oatmeal, and rice).

Remember, rats will eat anything that we eat. Just be sure the food isn't spicy/seasoned and isn't on the "forbidden foods list" for rats :).

There are lots of odd words out there for rats. Such as, "bruxing", "eye boggling", "rodentist", ect.

You can learn the "rattie lingo", here:

This is a great side with lots of FAQ's:

If there is anything else that you'd like to know, don't be afraid to ask :biggrin2:!

Wow thats alot of info! thanks very much shes managed to call me and the rat museli is just there to put in the cage apparently in case he wants it. When her brother dropped him off there was pasta and some veges and almonds and stuffin a container im thinking its oscars lol. hes in the garage but i've let him out like 3xs for a run in the bathroom. how much food should i be giving him? Thanks so much Amy and when mums back with the camera (tommorow) i'll put some pictures up just for you!:biggrin2:

This worries me :?. I'll try to explain in the least possible "jumpy" way. I am not attacking at all, just very concerned for his health.....

Was he living in the garage at your friends house? Is it hot/cold in your garage? Is it drafty? Are there cars going in and out of there? Any containers of gasoline?

It is very dangerous to keep a rat in the garage. Any drafts, even the ones you don't know about, can cause him to get ill with a URI extremely quickly. Not to mention, any fumes can certainly kill him. Rats have very sensitive respiratory systems.

I highly reccomend brining Oscar into the house. Rats thrive on humans (even just being around them while in the cage), if they don't have a rat buddy to hang out with.

As for food, I give my rats an unlimited amount of the grain mixture. For now, give Oscar 1 cup and hopefully your friend will call back again and you can ask her how much she usually gives to him.

He won't need much fresh foods, rattie tummies are small. Give him a good amount (1 large spoon-full equally of the foods), and if he eats it all within an hour, then that is a good amount. If there is still food left over after an hour, then decrease the amount next "dinner".

:)

I think i'll move him. I really dont want to end up with a sick rat I had put him in there as it gets quite hot up here. I think i'll put him in the spare room with a window open. Thanks so much againAmy:D

How hot is in in your house? I would also keep the window closed, any drafts, dust, smoke, ect coming in through the window could harm him. If you are afraid it's too hot, then do you have a small fan you could put in the room he is in? You could point the fan in the oposite direction from him, this will keep the air circulating, keeping it cooler.

It's a pain sometimes, but certain things need to be done to keep a URI from developing :p.

Its sort of like a muggy day temp.if i put him below the window? Oo Ive got it in the staircase is cool but not drafty or anything i could put him on the steps. that way hes out of harms way but can still see us and we can interact with him and its a nice temp but also light coz of the big skylight thingy, how does that sound? Thanks so much Amy for your help as i really have no idea what a rat does and Pops would have gotten back to a dead or ill rat!:(I did the pea game with him he didnt like water but he liked the peas!

You are very welcome, PepnFluff :).

The staircase sounds great. Did you put him on a stair or on a landing? If he's on a stair, be sure he can't tumble down the stairs :p.

I am glad Oscar loved the pea fishing! It's such a fun game for ratties because it challanges their minds and makes them work for their food.

I can't wait for pictures of Oscar. He sounds great :biggrin2:!

Hes on a landing thing. Im going to make him some more toys today.

I'll load some pictures this evening coz mums back.

Thank you.
