I went into the kitchen this morning to clear it up, and opened the window. As I went for the latch, I noticed a huge bumblebee sat on the window frame, very still. I carefully opened the window anyway, thinking that it would fly out, but it didn't.

Whilst I was washing up I kept an eye on it, but she didn't move the whole time. I eventually blew on her gently, and she tumbled off the window frame and laid down on the window ledge :( Now, I'm not normally one to bother about insects, but I think bumblebees are cute, in a strange sort of way, and this one was SO big, that it seemed a real shame if it was to die on my kitchen window ledge.

So, I quickly ran to my laptop and Googled sick bumblebees and how to help them. I read that sometimes they forget to or can't drink and get sick, or get cold, etc. Being that it had probably been stuck in my kitchen overnight, I figured it was probably thirsty, so I mixed some honey with some water like the website said. I put it in a plastic medicine spoon near the bee, and tipped some onto the window ledge for her to get at easily.

It worked!! She got up and started drinking the water- I've never seen a bee's tongue before, but I did today! Then she slept a little more, and then got up again, drank some more, climbed into the spoon to drink, and then all of a sudden she got up and flew away out the window! I was so happy! I did some more googling and going by her size she was probably a Queen bee, definitely female because I studied her legs and she had the 'pollen baskets'

Pics of a bee! They came out a little blurry because it was just about to rain and really, really poor light in my kitchen and I didn't want to use the flash and scare her:

Climbing out of the spoon, having got some energy back!

It sounds like a small thing, but I was so happy that the poorly bee got better and flew off! :D

WOW, JEN!! That's amazing! And what an adorable bee, too...she looks so cute!! I'm so happy you saved her life...and I know she'll be forever grateful to you for it! :)

It would be funny if you came to the kitchen and found a line of bees waiting outside the window because that cutie told all the bees in the neighborhood where to find yummy-tasting water? Hehe!! :)

OH NO...you know what they'd all do.....make a BEE LINE to your house!! Oh my gosh...that's terrible...lol!!!

It takes a special kind of person with a big heart to save a bee. :) Most people would have shooed it outside (among other things) and here you are Googling how to help her. I think that is amazing, and on behalf of the bee I say thank you.

It's incredible how cute they are. You got some good pics out of the deal, too.

I agree with Cait, you are a special kind of person. I'm quite fond of insects and always try to avoid killing them. I have helped out a Bumblebee before, they are cute! It was sitting on the sidewalk all dead like, so I put him on a tree branch to not get stepped on.

Bumblebee's have a very important job in nature. Without them, many plants would not be able to reproduce and would eventually become extinct, which would effect wildlife.

Aww, thanks you guys! :blushan:

I wouldn't have normally thought twice about it- well, actually I don't know if I would or not. I'd never ever kill an insect, but I'm not fond of many- they tend to freak me out, but I've always thought bees were cute. I was a little worried I might get stung, and I've never been stung before so I don't know if I'm allergic or not, but my Googling told me that bumblebees are not aggressive and rarely sting, so I stopped worrying about that.

I honestly nearly had a tear in my eye when she got up and flew away! I really thought she was a goner.

Rosie- BEE LINE? Omg, that sounds like something I would say, LOL!

I must say it takes a BEautiful person to BE this caring, I'm sure she'll BE very grateful to her BEnefactor, you'll be the BUZZ of the hive!

Do you think he'll be PUNimpressed?! :biggrin2: Sorry, couldn't help it... I came up with that one a while ago and my friends were exactly that!

Brandy, do you mean in the second picture? Because if you look at the first pic it shows that side of her and she has all 3 legs! I think it's just hidden in the middle pic.... :)

How cute! I probably would have been one to put it outside but can't really help it- I'm allergic and know this from past experience. What a lucky bee to have found you!

Hopefully, he'll just think it's....do I really have to say it??? PUNNY!! LOL!!

He just came home, too...I hear the clop, clop, clopping of his workboots upstairs. :D

OK...I have to post it...

Danny says this whole thread is PUNderful. :D

Thats so nice that you saved her! I don't think I would have, but I might not know she was sick either!

awh.. thats such a good heart to do that!awh.. i normally dont like them...but hey.. i might draw one for the fun.!
i am scared of them. i know cute bees..
i would not know it was sick.. awh. be careful.. you might have a hive over saying thanks.. your house will be a hive of activity

Good job, Jen! Most people would have just flicked her out of the window! I try to save bumble bees and honey bees, but if it's a wasp/hornet, it's out of luck at my house. Your bumble bees look different than the ones here. I mean, I'd expect them to, but it's just neat to see two different animals with the same name. :) I can't find a pic right now, but ours don't have as dark of stripes, and a large section on their "shoulders" is a pale yellow - no black stripe. Lovely pictures, though!

Convergent evolution is quite amazing don't you think!

Two insects on either side of the world can turn out exactly the same! It must say something for the way that they're designed.

Wooh you rock Jen! :thumbup Bees are so important to the world and even just by helping one you're doing something great. What a lucky bee!

She's beautiful too. The bees over here are less furry.
