Hello, I'm new to this forum. I have an 8 month old holland lop bunny. I got him at a pet store (I know I know). I felt so sorry for him how there were all these kids and birds screaming around him I just wanted to save him! Well, since I've got him in October he's been sick. He has had two staph infections and a illness called Acinetobacter. Now he has MRSA. The vet said he does not want to put anymore drugs in him because he does not want new bacteria to possibly make him more sick. So, now it's the waiting game to see if he'll pull through on his own. He's just breaking my heart! This rabbit has such a personality and I love him so much. I don't know if he's going to live long. He is a very active bunny so that gives me hope but I don't know. Has anyone else had this problem with their rabbits? Do you know any other information that can help me?

I agree with no more drugs for now, but you can boost up his immunity with probiotics such as bennepro. That should help the good bacteria fight the bad. You're doing the best you can. Most pet store rabbits are just fine, but it's always a bigger risk than one from a breeder or shelter.

Welcome to the forum & I hope all will be well.

Do you mean benneprotein?

Sorry I meant BeneBac. I use a probiotic made for humans for myself & honey, so I couldn't remember the brand name that most people use with their rabbits.

Welcome to RO. So sorry to hear you have a sick bunny. I have to agree with Vet and others who posted that no more meds should be used. Unfortunately sometimes with bunnies, there is a "waiting" game for us humans. And it's a helpless time because as your feelings in your writing note, we love our bunnies and are helpless at this time to do anything to help.

Probiotics was one thing I did get when I was in that "waiting" game with Neville and his Wry Neck. Hoping it wasn't something more worse than Wry Neck (how you say, can any illness be worse than the one they have, but unfortunately there are.) I didn't have to use it since Neville continued to eat. But we did use Wheat Grass, grown fresh here, to help stimulate energy and settle his belly. It worked like a charm.

Hoping the "waiting" game is short, and your sweet new addition can live a healthy happy life with you and yours. Wishing you all the best! Please keep us posted.

I am not sure what the rationale is to not use antibiotics for the MRSA. Also, where is the infection (lungs, abscess, etc)? Rabbits have a very poor immune system and are unlikely to get over a bacterial infection without help. I would definitely do probiotics daily to help him out, and there are other things you can do depending on where the infection is to improve his ability to function.

Make sure you don't get the MRSA from your bunny, that is a serious concern.

The Benebac should be at any big box pet store like petco, petsmart,etc.. or online.
Sending healing energy to your bunny.
