Most people here know that I rescue abused and neglected rodents. Well, I am working on obtaining an animal right now, that will most likely not be handed over. Here's the scoop: I went to my former job earlier to pick up some medicine, as they were the only place in town that carried it. Now remember, this is the place that abuses there animals, and gave me he!! for rescuing Harper. Well, the girl that I used to work with in the animal room was there working hershift, and wegot totalking and stuff.

Well, a girl that worked there lonnnngg ago, like 4 years ago, came by today and gave them her pet rat, who is going on 4 years old. She did this because she is moving halfway across the country, and can't bring her. Well, she gave them the rat's big nice 2 story cage, and all her toys, and told them that the rat was a single rat with no playmate, so that the rat was used to lots of human attention. Thinking the rat was in good hands, she left happy. As soon as she left, they threw the rat in a dirty 10 gallon tank, with no toys. It's sitting on the bottom of a shelf, in total darkness.

I want this rat. I want it NOW. And if I don't get it, I do think I will be making some phone calls. In order to get the rat, I have to go through the girl who runs the animal department, who will be there tomorrow. I want the rat's original cage too, as that is what she is used to, and I don't want to stress her out by throwing her in something different (AGAIN).

So, I need lots of prayers, and good vibes, and positive thoughts that I will get this little rattie tomorrow. Everyone cross their fingers for her!!

WOOHOO!! I got her!!

Well, I am *getting* her. The store manager agreed to hand her over under one condition;I hand him over $15 for his "troubles". Whatever. $15 is nothing to me if I can give her a good, loving home with lots of toys and attention. I'll be getting her at 3pm today, wheeeeee!!

Thanks everyone for the good vibes, and prayers, and positive thoughts!

I'll post some pictures of her on this thread this evening when she gets home. :D

Hooray!

I do get her cage with her, which is good. She will be able to live in the cage that she has known her whole life. That'll help ease her stress a lot.

I asked what her name was, and they said is was "Scabbers" from Harry Potter. Cute, I guess. I'm a huge HP fan, but Scabbers is a boy name. I wanted to name her Layla or something girly, but since she is so old, I guess I will leave her name as it is.

I can't wait to get her and fix her cage up so nice and neat, and get her some extra new toys and stuff. Wheeeee!! :D

Well, she's here! I can't say that I don't have concerns. Obviously, the girl who had her before did not take one ounce worth of care of her. The rat has bumblefoot (balls of infection on the bottom of her feet due to walking on old rusty wire), a bad upper respiratory infection, and mites. So now she is getting Neosporin for the feet, Ivermec for the mites, and I'mon my way to get some Baytril for the URI.

Anything else?! *Sigh* I'm concerned because she is going to be housed in my room with all my other animals. Hopefully no one else will get sick, considering it's airborne. I've got one of my old girl ratties suffering with it right now as it is. I didn't need two of them with it, but oh well, it's not her fault.

Pictures shall follow in a little while!

Poor baby :( Keep us posted on her condition.

Alright, here we go! Presenting, SCABBERS!

I didn't get as good of a look at her cage yesterday as I thought I did. The cage has very rusty wire floors, which are eating into her feet. I covered them with bedding for now, however, I'm going to get her a new cage in a couple weeks when I get some more money. I need to see how she does right now. Aside from being very old, she's also pretty sick, and very malnourished. I put food in there, and she's hoarding it like she hasn't eaten in a week. I'm going to give her some Stat, which is a high vitamin supplement for animals, and see how she does being on it for a week.

She just got her first dosage of Baytril, and she should be feeling better within 3-5 days, and all better in about 10 or so. Her URI might be one reason why she is so ruffled and skinny. Everyone keep up the positive thoughts and prayers for her!

EDIT: to say that from the pics, you can't tell she is that skinny. However, when you hold her, all you feel is bones. And when she climbs, her ribs and back bone stick out.

That is just wonderful,i'm so glad you got her,at least she will be well taken care of now:)

Rat's are just the sweetest little things,we had 3 pet rats Poppy,Sleepy and Missy but they died of cancerous tumours and i'm scared to own anymore because of that, you can fall in love with these creatures quite easily but then they leave us so quick:(

i will be keeping her in my thoughts and i hope she gets better real quick:)

You go MBH!!

Poor little rat :(. She'll have an awesome home with you!

:XStupid dumb dumb people.. can't they give a rats donkey (sorry had to use the pun.. :)) about how they care for their animals?!!

Good job!

I got a couple more pictures of Scabbers, who I have renamed Layla! I think I may end up taking her to the vet soon for a check-up, because I am beginning to wonder if she isn't deaf. All my rats I've ever owned, including my other two rat girls I have right now, have always been able to hear the slightest sound. If you walk into the room, they'll jump up from a dead sleep. Layla, however doesn't hear anything. She was sleeping a minute ago, and I ran into the cage by accident, the dogstarted barking... nothing. I opened her cage door, nothing... Only when I touched her did she jump a foot in the air, as if she hadn't heard a thing.
