Craigs List posting I ran across this morning:

Hi I'm looking to ADOPT, REHOME or WHATEVER is LEGAL on this site. I just want a cute little bunny that I can call Thumper hahaha I can't have a white one with red eyes because my fiance is scared it might go evil on him(some movie he seen). I've tried emailing a few people with no response back. I would rather get one from an individual than a pet store being that I've heard that they are not the healthiest. I don't want to get one from a "Rescue Center" because I only want 1 male or female either way & don't need to spay/neuter it because I don't plan on letting it run around outside with other bunnies & don't plan on breeding it either. AS LONG AS I CAN PLAY WITH IT & LOVE IT WITHOUT IT BITING ME I'LL TAKE IT.

Actually, I wish someone would contact her and give her some information without flaming her.

She just has a different sense of humor, I think. I personally dont like the appearance of REWs- does that make me evil? She just needs a gentle push in the right direction. Im sure if someone explained to her why we spay and neuter she might be more open to it.

Honestly, so many bunnies are in such bad situations Im more inclined to educate anyone interested in rabbits rather than condemn them for their ignorance.

I sent her some general info on spaying and neutering, some links on different rabbit breeds and care info.

I don't think anyone is evil for liking/disliking a certian look.

I do think its a bit silly that her fiance doesn't want a red eyed rabbit because he fears it may turn evil, all due to a movie he watched.

I think somebody watched Donnie Darko and took it a little to seriously.

Yanno, I do hate to sound harsh, but doing what I do, I have people all the time call me or come by saying the exact same thing, and they are DEAD SERIOUS, and I am looking at them like... your joking, right?

And they aren't...

They totally are not..

So that's where my stand on it is..

Do you have any idea how many people think my REW Flemish are the SAME rabbit they saw in Monthy Python and the Holy Grail? "Killer" rabbits? What a shame... (You can see from my avatar how "evil" my whites are....) I tell them they are the Cadbury bunnies!

Yeah, education is needed... :foreheadsmack:

In all fairness, something with bright red or pink eyes is a little unusual and can be a bit intimidating at first. I used to be a bit scared of REW myself, until I got over it. Now I love them! It just took me thinking about why I felt they were a bit scarey, and realising I was being silly. I also don't like lionheads that much and think they are a bit scarey looking :p, so we know I'm a bonifide "stupid person" :D.

When I was younger, I was intimidated by the albino look. But now, it's one of my favorites! My boyfriend is obsessed with the albino look, he thinks it's absolutely amazing.

Good job on sending her some info. Leaf!

I have neighbors that their daughter is absolutely TERRIFIED of rabbits. She tried to see and hold Bo when he was a baby and nearly threw him cause he moved funny.

Needless to say - I haven't had her back here since. :X

Oh my, I hoope they read soem of the information and become more educated on rabbits before they get one.

I had a REW before. We named her Mari short for something else :p

I don't think I'll ever go out of my way to get a REW but I'm not going to close my doors just because of its looks if one needs help.

But then..there was a REW rat at Petco the other day and I fell in love lmao.

You know its so funny. My second bun was a REW female and i loved her to bits and pieces. In fact the reason i chose her was because i thought it was cool she had red eyes. lol. That was my heart bunny.

Same here Okiron, Imightnever have chosen one, but I didn't think twice about not getting Snowy just because she's a REW! Now I feel very protective of them!

To me, a bunny is a bunny, and if you can love one, there's no reason to not love them all :)

That's not what made me angry about that adthough... In fact I'm not angry, just worried,it makes me think that there must be a lot ofpeople thatget rabbits without knowing how to look after them properly, the reasons for getting them spayed/neutered (other than them interacting with other buns), the food that they should eat, the importance of hay etc etc.

*WARNING! RANT ABOUT TO START!*:soapbox

I got really annoyed earlier when we went to get some more pellets and this woman was buying the massive bag of 'rabbit museli' blatantly just because it was cheaper, with a fibre content of about 7%. Then I thought that maybe she just couldn't afford the pellets as they are a bit more expensive, but then I thought that if she fed them the correct amount of pellets and not massive bowls of the museli stuff it'd last lots longer! (Some assumptions here I know!)

Sorry, a bit off topic and a bit of a rant there, I just hate to think of buns who aren't as well looked after as they could be, because not all rabbit owners are members here!

Lots of my friends think my REW's are scary and they are scared of them. No idea why. I would dump my friends before I got rid of a rabbit.

"He's got huge, sharp... er... He can leap about. Look at the bones!"

Educate.

I feel like this is becoming my theme song ;):

Just remember, as frustrating as it is when we see someone buying the wrong type of food or not spaying/neutering etc...it might not be because they dont care, but just because they dont know. And while it seems obvious to most of us that they should go on the internet and do research etc, to some people it just never crosses their minds.

I feel stupid now, but when I first got Basil I was really clueless- seriously everything youre not supposed to do (Kaytee fiesta free fed, bunny bath, cedar, the whole nine yards), I did.

It wasnt that I didnt love him to bits, I just didnt know- and I didnt know there was info out there.

So again, try to be friendly and educate, not judge :biggrin2:

Me too, Haley. Remember how dumb I felt when I realized that I had been feeding Bun Bun alfalpha pellets his whole life? It didn't say anything on the package, it never crossed my mind, and that's before I joined this forum and after being here a bit, it dawned on me to look at the ingredients:?. I felt so stupid too.

Today I was at the petstore to get litter, and wanted to see if they had gotten any new products, so I walked down the treat/bedding isle. There was this mom and girl that looked to be about 12 or 13. She had these apple treats and was asking her mom about them, and the mom said, well it says rabbits love them. Man, I almost interrupted with "Excuse me" and went on to say a few nice things about how they don't need them and blah, but didn't. What would you guys have done? I think I should make it my mission in the future, to give them a bit of info and invite them to join the forum!:biggrin2:

AngelnSnuffy,

I think I would have used that opertunity to pipe up with a "My rabbits love little pieces of fresh apple and banana! I always share a little bit of my fruit with my bunnies." And then go on, if they are interested, to share about the forum.

I will often chat with people in petstores about rabbits. I normally approach it by telling them what my rabbits like or how this litter is the best out of the ones I've tried. People are normally very open to anything that will save them money. So I'll normally open with a suggestion about where to get cheap hay or litter.

Sometimes you'll pipe in and you can just tell the person doesn't care. So you have to give up and try again next time. More often than not I'll end up engaged in a pleasant conversation and feel like I've shares some valuable information.

Dawn? Thanks for sharing that:D! Okay, I will be ammunition ready to tango-so to speak:p. I'll offer my knowledge gently, and see how it goes.

Yay, thanks for the vote of confidence, even when you don't want to "butt in"-I will:) (I'd like to have a camera man ready to go as well, haha);).-Maybe I should make sure my son is with me everytime and have the camera handy. Wonder how peeps might feel, and how petstore will say "You can't film in here":?.
