Toby is 7 months old-ish, I still consider him a baby :) He is still getting unlimited alfalfa based pellets and he's never shed before. I've almost never really groomed him officially. He has some guard fur and the rest of his fur is somewhat rexie that grooming is overkill for him. He takes care of it himself usually. He's had bouts of furriness a couple of times but nothing quitelike this. I think he's setting up for his first molt.

There's a thin layer of fur all over the floor of his pen. His hidey box is lined with fur. There is "tumblefur" rolling around the rabbit nation. I ran a brush on him a few dozen times and came out with lots of loose fur, plus when I ran my fingers through his fur, he developed what another member, khermann, has coined cactus-butt: guard fur and loose fur standing up on end from static. I tried to get all that stuff off him but I just can't get it all. He'll probably continue to shed for weeks.

He's been feeling pretty down in the dumps the last few days. He is not interested in running around. (but still eating his greens,a bit of hay, still drinking)His poops have looked a little smaller. I saw 1 stringy poop. He seems to be eating less hay. Normally I have to fill his hay basket twice a day. So far this week I've been hardly filling it once daily.

Usually when Kirby starts to get all bothered from shedding and his poos don't look big and round, I decrease his pellets immediately to get him to eat more hay. But Toby is still free-fed pellets because of his age. What do I do to get him to eat more hay??

I did just get my Kleenmama 3rd cut hay so hopefully he would rather eat that. Some soft hay is better than less hay intake overall.

I would suggest increasing his water consumption and cutting back on pellets. Use some unsweetened apple juice or pineapple juice, even vanilla, hopefully this will get Kirby drinking more and therefore eating more hay.

I came home and saw his hay racks didn't look different from this morning. Got very concerned. Cracked open a can of pumpkin and gave him a heaping teaspoon of it. Hope it helps. Ugh. I hate molts.

Toby is 3 lbs 7oz.

Here are some side shots.

The best top view I could get. Every time I get up to take a higher shot, he stands up with me. :p

He must be so distressed now. In order to weigh him (since he's so small, I figured displacing my weight on a human scale would be no good) I had to use my food scale. I had to put him in a mixing bowl and put a food cover (the plastic kind with holes) and then weigh him on the food scale (zero'ed out the bowl and cover). Rabbit on a food scale, in a bowl... what could be more scary for a little 3lb 7oz bun?? :p:shock:

That's good to know. He just feels very small... when I touch him, I feel all his bones. Kirby doesn't feel like that at all. Toby is not that much smaller than Kirby when they are laid out, flat, but he's literally half his weight. :( He is better now than when I first got him. He was so thin when I got him, and he had coccidia.

Maybe the molting is just making him mopey and sad and not in the mood. I am pushing pumpkin mash and as much hay as he'll eat. I sit here feeding him piece by piece because I think he thinks it is fun to be fed. :p

You could also lightly spritz his hay with a bit of baby apple juice...see if that entices him to eat more of it.

A lot of the "filling out" a bunny does seems to happen between years 1.5 and 2--that's how it was for Tony. I think it's fine to start limiting pellets for him. I know I probably sound like a broken record on this, but PROBIOTICS! I love 'em. Pumpkin puree is a good choice too. You may consider getting "special delicious" hay to add to his rack when he's not eating a ton. I add oat hay to Tony and Muffin's when they really need it.

I cleaned out his litter box at around 12:30 and he hasn't pooped in the last 4 hours. He hasn't eaten either. He's mostly been sleeping in his box.

I totally forgot I have benebac powder, I bought it a while ago in case I needed it! (duh...I don't know how I forgot, I even saw it 2 days ago in the bunny care box:p)

How much do I give for a 3lb 7oz bun? I can probably mix it inwith pumpkin and he'll eat it up!

Let me see about some oat hay. I also bought some alfalfa that I stopped feed him like a month ago (His litter box was getting pretty white-grimey, I thought I would give him just timothy to decrease calcium). I'll see if he wants to eat some alfalfa... thanks!
