I'm thinking of having my 2 spayed but the brother of one of them died after just being put under anesthetic so i'm a bit worried she could do aswell?

It does depend on the vet, but also on the rabbit. A rabbit savvy vet should know what they are doing and have a very low mortality rate. The rabbits that do not make it tend to have some underlying issue that can make it harder on them. Sometimes a rabbit may have a bad reaction to the drugs used and even if they vet tries to save them is doesn't always happen.

You should talk with the vet about your concerns. Find a vet that is comfortable doing spays and has lots of experience with them. Do lots of research on your own so you can ask questions and know if the answers are right. Getting blood work done can be a good idea so you can hopefully find out if anything is not normal before they go under.

Yep, check with the individual vet. It should be on the lines of they lose no more than one and neuter hundreds. And the one, is usually because there was an underlying medical issue eg cancer they were unaware of or a heart defect etc.

Did they give a reason for the brothers death?

Yeah, I'm curious about this as well. I think I'm getting RIpley neutered in the spring and would be interested to know.

No sorry they didn't, the vets just said that when they put the anesthetic in his heart rate started dropping. Sounds almost as though they could have put too much in or something to me :s its the vets I usually go to so I think i'm going to go somewhere else if I do get them spayed. Although I did get my other rabbit done there and she was fine, she died of cancer at the age of 2 though:(

We've had 12 males and 20 females done at 4 different vets with no problems to speak of. We checked them all out very thoroughly first and then kept an eagle-eye on our buns.

I would ask a vet, I'd also ask your vet to run bloodwork on the sister of the one that passed, it could be an allergy to the anesthetic and possibly hereditary?
