Running down the street here in Costa Mesa California I saw a little dwarf bunny chomping on some dried leaves in a front yard. I knocked on the door of the house to inquire about the bun.
The nice lady said it was the neighbors and they had given up trying to contain it. I guess it "kept getting out so they gave up trying to catch it" She also said that they had called animal control and so far no one had been out.
I called my hubby and had him come help me catch her. She was pretty scared. after about half an hour we caught her.
It was getting dark and we didn't want her to be coyote food.
My daughters fell in love as soon as they saw her. We have many animals and weren't in the market for another but... How can you resist this little girl?

Oh and I know it's obviously a dwarf but what kind? How can you tell the age? Is there a way to tell if it is a spayed female or neutered male?

Good for you for taking in the homeless bunny! I don't know how to tell the age of a bunny, but maybe someone else can help answer that question. As for how to tell if it's a boy or girl and neutered, I can't help with that either, but I do know that if you Google it, there are pictures of girl bunny and boy bunny parts on the internet that you can reference. I doubt it's neutered because of the way it was abandoned. Neutering can be expensive and if they didn't care enough to keep trying to catch it, I don't think they are the kind of people who would spend money to have it neutered/spayed. My advice is to take it to a vet who is experienced with rabbits and get it checked over. The vet can tell you it's sex and will be able to tell if it's neutered, but may not be able to tell if it has been spayed since that's an internal surgery. The vet can check it's overall health too. This is a great forum for learning how to care for a rabbit so ask away and check out the library section too.

She looks like a mini hottentot, but she sure is a cutie and I lived in Los Angeles for 5 years and know what you mean about Coyote food. My girlfriend lost her
cat to a coyote one night it went out to use the bathroom. I'm so glad you got this bun and are going to give it a good home!

looks like a dwarf mix of uncertain origin. Not a true dwarf due to ear length. If I were to guess....I'd say netherland x mini rex based on head shape and overall build.

Age will have to be a guess at. My guess is over six months and under 2 years.

Thanks for the info! So the ears are longer than a true dwarf? Wow! She is really tiny weighs maybe 1-2 lbs.

ImageUploadedByRabbit Forum1404477981.897271.jpgthis is my 9 month old pure bred Netherlands Dwarf she is fully grown and not much bigger then an adult male rat, or my foot for that matter. You can see her ears are quite small compared to other breeds and her build is very fine and weighs about 1.2kg

I agree that her ears look a little too long to consider her a dwarf. As far as age goes, once they're adults it's difficult to tell. If the bun is a female and you have her spayed, sometimes the vet can give you an idea then based on how her internal organs look (older females build up more fat in their abdomen).

If your neighbors were having too much trouble containing her I'd guess she hasn't been spayed. If the bun is a boy it's pretty obvious whether or not he's been neutered but you'd need a vet to help you determine if a female has been spayed.

I'd recommend a vet appointment anyway to get an idea of how she's doing.
