oh and btw i got into the vet and she gave me some dewormer for possible pionworms, but she said they arnt parasitic and are common in rabbits. So idk if that is the problem. mom says that my doe may be dry if the babies havnt been drinking.

k i checked a couple websites about rabbits and found out that babies get their eyes clogged and go shut. also the bottom thing is normal too, but i didnt see anything about mucus... well anyway GOOD NEWS!! :pinkelepht: :D (brownie is doing worse though... :()

It is not normal for baby bunnies to get crusty eyes OR to have feces caked all over their butts and mucous in their waste. It also isn't normal for them to get thin or lethargic as you've described. I don't know what website you were on, but I question it's accuracy strongly.

Is the vet you brought them to rabbit savvy? I'm concerned that all she said was to give them an anti-parasitic. What diagnostic tests were performed? Did you give you any pointers about rehydration or putting weight on them? If there is a risk that mom dried up you need to figure out how to keep them well fed until they are feeling better.

Also: is hay constantly available to mom and babies? I saw mention of pellets but not hay hence my asking.

Fenbendazole is the dewormer in Panacur and some other antiparasitic drugs. Dewormer may help but I think an antibiotic would do much better, plus a check to see if there's syphilis involved. Worms would cause GI upset, but the mucus-covered stools are more likely to be from a bacterial infection. Also, you'd be able to see pinworms in their feces.

Here is the Merck Vet Manual ref on intestinal diseases--it's a bit old school but can be helpful. I do not ever think an enema is a good idea for a rabbit, though, btw.

I think an antibiotic called Flagyl would be good in this situation. Its active ingredient is metronidazole, which is an antibiotic, antiparasitic and anti-inflammatory which can help the gut. I also probably mentioned Questran previously--it's a drug that binds the bacterial toxins and gets them out of the body so they don't poison the bunny. It requires you to administer a lot of water, but I think these guys could use a lot of water right now anyway. Your vet should have both drugs and know how to use them/if my ideas make sense. I'm not a vet of course.

no the vet is not rabbit-savy. the lil brown died this morning. T_T The website i was on said to wip the eyes when they go shut and trim the bottom to prevent poo from getting stuck. again i say that the poo wasnt diarrhea. Mom saw a website that looked promising that talked about mucoid enteritis. It looks spot on, but the blackie is absolutly fine now. Hes eating and suckling and drinking water. I will take him to Rockford if he shows any signs of going downhill.

oh and my sis says the "the dark side always prevails!!" (wat a nerd :l) and now if hes really a boy we will call him

I'm so sorry you lost the brown one. I hope the black one pulls through ok, and it's good that you have a plan to go to the vet if his condition changes.

It's ok to wipe the eyes if they get mucusy, and to cut the hair around the bum if the poop is runny, but the thing is that it's not normal for babies to have mucusy eyes and runny poop. You've got solutions to deal with those issues, but the cause of them isn't going away. With some time, the intestinal issues may clear up. The crusty eyes are strange and I worry about syphilis still regarding them.
