Hi!

We are new to bunnies and new to the forum. My name is Ji and my significant is Lindsey :)

We just purchased a rescue and have been doing a good bit of reading up, although theres more to learn. Im an avid gardner and love growing hot chili peppers so our new guy "Jack" doubles as a fun pet and a fertilizer factory lol.

Hes extremely calm, and pretty personable I was very surprised.

Anyone have any idea what kind he is?? If anyone could tell us that would be great and I can read up on his breed specifically. Any and all info is greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the forums. Congrats on your new addition.

Its really hard to tell but my first guess was a mini rex. When i took a closer look the fur didnt seem to have the same texture as the mini rex fur. Then i thought maybe a mini satin but going back and googling red mini satin the fur looks to short.
So im going to guess mini rex cross?

Definately a broken red in color

hello and welcome from me and my rexes. yours is a very cute bunny. i cant quite see in the pics but those whiskers look a tad curly and rexy. the red is a beautiful colour tho:D

We were told he was about a year old, but cant be certain and Im not so sure they were either.

That cage is 2' deep (2'dx4'w) to give an indicator.

On a side note, he has settled in much quicker than I thought. Last night and today he has started 'nipping' at us. Im not sure if its a playful or not he does it mostly to Lindsey. It hasntreally been anything painful, andhe certainly shows complete signs of being comfortable around us much to my surprise for it being so soon. Walking right up to us, cleaning himself right next to us, and laying down all sprawled out. Yesterday we let him loose for an hour or so and he was jumping and doing flips and all kinds of shennanigans lol, until hejust plopped down on the floorclose to us and watched us cookdinner. It was pretty entertaining.

Today, lindsey said the nip was enough that she said no and put him back in his cage. He was kind of digging into her side with his head and paws and nipped her so its possible thatin todaysincidenthe thought he was just chewing on her shirt or something. Personally, Ive only had him mouth me a little but I didnt feel his teeth.

Yesterday though he definately was mouthing/nipping at our skin and theres no doubt he was fully aware of it ... for whatever reason.

As mentioned we've only had him for two days and holy moly ... the first day he was calm, but sweet and gentle. Last night and today he's much bolder ... he'll nudge your arm out of the way with his head if he wants to see whats underneath it or if its in his way. He is neutered BTW.

Any suggestions??

Let me welcome you to Rabbits Online, my name is Dave and I am a moderator on the forum. So if I can be of any help please let me know. This is a terrific website for rabbits and their slaves, not only is it very active but also friendly. I am so glad you’re here and I know you will enjoy it.

A very cute bunny.

Sometimes rabbits will nipand dig to let you know that you stopped petting and they want you to start up.

Many bunny's recommend their slaves to this site so we may learn of others methods to keeping our furry masters happy.

If you everhave a sick bunny, please post in The Infirmary and include your rabbit's age, breed and health history as well diet and output details leading up to the problem.

I have listed some links I thought you might find interesting:

*For reference the Library section

*To brag or tell everyone about the antics of your bunny or just to talk about your day here is where to start a Bunny Blog, you can also look back at it later and remember when you had a life before your bunny.

*Now all the bunny’s like talk to each other when we mere slaves aren’t around in the Bunny Chat is the spot to be.

*Rabbits Online also has regional forums , this a good way to find a vet in your area that has experience with rabbits and to find out from other nearby of good sources of rabbit supplies.

The Let Your Hare Down section is for anything non-bunny related.

Here is a link tothat will help you and your bunny to connect, How To Bond With Your Bunny.

Now every forum has rules and ours can be found with this link Rabbits Online Forum Rules. This gives guidelines on what is acceptable, what is not and how we hope everyone will treat each other.

Everyone on this forum loves to see pictures of each other’s bunnies. So if you would like to post a picture this link will help you do that, Upload Photo's to Photo Gallery. Then in the post, you click on the "G" in the tool bar to insert your photo. Many people also use Photobucket. You just copy the img file and paste it into the post.

I am glad you have joined rabbits online and I look forward to seeing you around.

i agree with everyone else...looks like rex. as for the nipping....when he does that you have to say "ow" real loud so it startles him and do it every time til he gets the idea he's hurting you and does't like the loud noise you make when he does it...BTW...rabbit bites hurt!!:nod

a nip is their way of getting attention and to "train" you. When they bite, there will be blood. Esther used to growl and nudge when we sat on the couch as she thought it was hers. Bun-Bun used to nudge our feet if they were where she wanted to lay down. The only really persistent nipper we had was Peter--I used the loud "OW" method to no avail with him so I treated him as if I were the Alpha Male rabbit. When he acted aggressive, I would pin him down and roll him onto his back and talk to him in a calm voice and keep him like that for about a minute. He's a wonderful rabbit now and does not nip or bite at all. If Jack isn't neutered you'll want to have it done as it will also mitigate undesirable behavior.

Thanks for the input guys! Its greatly appreciated. He hasnt drawn blood and It seems to be a nibble, although today he has gotten agressive with lindsey when we go to put him back in the cage. Again, he doesnt do it to me.

Although we have found another problem (which I will do some reading on) when we let him out to get some excersize he sprints around and does his high jumps and side kicks and then lays down in a good spot. However, when we go to put him back of course he begins a cat and mouse chase so to speak. Hes not really running fast, just a couple hops ahead of us every single time. The only way we can get him back in is to corner him and nab him so to speak.

Lindsey tried to pick him up to put him away and he nipped her again agressively. No blood drawn and again it didnt hurt her but just agressive.

I dont want to chase him around to get him back in so I realize this isnt a good action. I tried oats (his favorite treat) but could only cox him out of the corner not into his cage. Eventually, I just cornered him and he layed down knowing he couldnt go anywhere. Instead of picking him up I layed down next to him and pet him for about two minutes or so before finally, calmly picking him up and putting him back in his cage.

we have litter boxes inside of cardboard boxes--the best are the two piece ones that apples come in--that we've cut holes into on each side. When it's time to go up, they will run inside and then the box can be picked up and used as a transport. Peter and Lilli both go right into the box with no coaxing now.

Thats a great idea, thanks so much for the input!

However, how do you get them to go in the box when you need to put them up??
