I buy either the kaytee or the oxbow timothy cubes and give them to the buns on occasion, just for added variety in their day. They definitely make a mess though.

The hay cubes are definately messy. When I put out some cubes, I'm prepared for extra vacuuming the next day. The bunners enjoy them so much though. I put out cubes 2-3 times per week. A 25 lb. box is lasting forever.

PEG.....NO MORE FRUIT LOOPS ?!?!! Well, since you are measuring out your feed better, then I bet your bags will stretch out more, saving money!!

As for the baby carrots...they are so expensive to buy! I recently started buying whole carrots in the bulk bags...I get about 10 carrots for 68 cents! I just wash them, cut them up, and put them into zip lock baggies.

Yeah....at least I'm trying to tell myself "no more fruit loops" for the bunnies.

Truth be told - I may save them for Sundays and give every bun ONE fruit loop to celebrate the weekend - they enjoy them so much (and I do too). Its always been such fun to say "tonight we have crunchies" and see them sit up and then eagerly look in their bowl to find the fruit loops....I think I did it more for me than I did for them.

I've also decided that I can't bring myself to totally cut off craisins from Zeus. I'm going to add one (or two) to his salad every couple of days....like on days if he doesn't get part of a banana or something.

I mean - I don't eat totally healthy either....so I refuse to feel too awful guilty for giving them a TINY bit of treats. (Besides - Zeus just spent 15 minutes licking off my plate and fork from a piece of cream cheese danish I had on the bed a bit ago...there wasn't much left on it - but he was having such fun....it was mostly danish flakes - no cheese - and very little of that...I didn't have the heart to take the fork away - particularly since he was also throwing it and then licking it and then throwing it again...).

What was funny was a week or so ago when I FINALLY switched the lionheads down to the amount of food they should be eating for pellets. They looked in their food bowls and then looked at me as if to say, "Um...didn't you forget like 2/3 of my food???"

I find that they're dumping their food bowls less often now and there aren't usually any leftovers....and they are enjoying the hay (mostly).

Sophie loves the Timmy hay cubes I give it him as a treat and he gets unlimited hay as well. I just gave him one last night and his rugs are all green, hehe, messy.

I got Oxbow timmy hay cubes at a store once--a local chain. Also, if you have the refrigerator space, you can usually buy pounds and pounds of big carrots (especially in the fall) that are meant to be deer bait (at least here in the land of the whitetail!). I never have the fridge space, but if you did, or if you had a cold storage room in the basement or something, it might be a good idea!

I bought Oxbow timothy hay cubes for my bun last year. I was hoping it would be a fun treat but Gimpy hated them. He would come and sniff them and then he would flick his nose and steer clear of them until I removed them from his cage. So weird

What is used to bind the hay bits together and form the cube?

I have a friend with a horse, and she buys the bulk bags of alfalfa hay cubes for her horse. She will occasionally send me one or two pounds, and I'll store them and give them out as occasional treats. I only use them as treats, and I wil lbreak the larger ones into smaller pieces, so I don't think that bit of alfalfa has much of an impact on them.

Previously, I did buy one pack of the Kaytee timothy ones from the petstore, just to try them out. (I'm not a fan of Kaytee, either, but getting the one bag allowed me to find out if my bunnies liked them, before getting some from another company.)

My bunnies really love them, Nick and Amelia just got one Saturday night, and it was gone by morning. I think the alfalfa gives them a bit of variety, as well.

Oh- I just checked busybunny.com, and they carry the Oxbow brand timothy hay cakes, looks like $5.99 for a 1 lb package.

I do like to give the occasional baby carrot, as well. I eat some carrots as a snack at work every day, so I've always got them around. I go through an entire 1lb package every week, just by myself, lol! There is one brand I particularly like, and they run me $1.68 per pack, normally. About once a month they're on sale for $1.50, and right now, they're on sale for only $1 per pound. I bought 4 bags today, lol!

For awhile, I was getting the whole carrots, and cutting them, but the time involved got to me. It's not really that much work, but on top of my other Sunday chores (making yogurt, preparing fruit for the week, vacuuming, etc), that was one thing I decided I could live without doing every week.

When I give carrots to my bunnies, I will cut each baby carrot into four pieces, and give one piece to each bunny. Sugar is strictly limited in this house!
