No, they're real cicada shells! I just painted and decorated them.

^ You can find them on trees.

Being nearsighted isn't the best thing to have when looking at something far away, but certianly comes in handy when painting something as gental as these.
They're very fragile and break easily - I add glaze on some of them, but sometimes just putting it on can cause legs to break off. It takes a really steady hand.

When I get some more super glue tomarow, I'll finally be able to add the finishing touches to one of my gourds - whiskers! It's a Koga(my castor broken mini rex) gourd. Walmart has been out of gray felt for over a week, so I'm going to have to take a trip to the craft store this weekend to get the Mr. Bun Bun(sable point holland lop) gourd finish.
I also have some more I'm working on, but they're a surprise.

Here is my rabbit gourd.

It's Koga! I'm working on Mr. Bun Bun, but I need more felt.
The thighs, paws, and ears are made of felt. The tail is made of real cotton grown from my garden. Googly eyes for eyes. Pipe cleaners for whiskers. Markings on felt painted with acrylic.
Not as good as I wanted it to be, but it's still cute.
I will post my other gourds when they are finished in this topic.

AWh, its brillant! Im not good with that bit of art, lol
That rabbit looks so cute!!!

Thanx guys!

I don't like using needle and thread, I'm not really great with it. Instead, I often use super glue. It's bonds great, except when it bonds to my fingers!

I love the insects - we see the cicada shells all over the farm in the summertime - this summer we did not have many with the wet and colder weather we had.

The bunny gourd is cool, too.

My husband used to dry gourds and save them to toss in our following summer's bonfires... he claimed they would "pop". I have yet to see it but the gourds we dried had to be 100% intact for them to dry properly and once dried I loved how the seeds inside made the gourd into a rattle.

My gourds are hanging in there! Let's hope nothing fails. One of the gourds I'm doing is taking forever. I'm out of glue - AGAIN. And on my last bottle of glaze, that was discontinued in craft stores! I'm going to have to use that kind of gloss that will make you dazed out 10 feet away from it.

If I can squeeze in a random question, what's the name of this type of art?:

I can't find any type of info on how to do this. I just found images of "pine cone/pine needle art" but the sites just show images with no info on how to make it.
I want to find out how to do this! I've made things with pine cones, but nothing like this!

:yeahthat:that looks fabulous, ive no idea what you call it but it's going on my ever-lengthening to-do list:D

ps - anybun who tells you i've superglued my fingers together whilst crafting, or sewn a quilt block to my finger (hard skin) is lying thru their whiskers:ph34r2:ph34r2

I have no idea, but i think logically, you can make a "skelaton" or frame for the body shape, then get real pine cone shells or fake realistic ones then glue them, and add on that furry/straw stuff.
Im adding taht to my "before i die list"

Forgot to show the Mr. Bun Bun ones!

Here's Baby Bun Bun:

Here's Mr. Mold Mold:
imag0601.jpg

^ This guy, including the Koga gourd had mold spots on them! They were the only ones that weren't molding either!
But I got rid of it, had to paint in the spots again, though.
I was just too anxious to wait such a long time to paint them!

I will be getting pics of all of them cause I'm gonna be super pissed if they decompose on me - so I need something to remember them by. lol
