Hi! I am really indecisive about what type of litter box I want to do. My bun likes to go in both back corners so I am using my old rat cage for his litter box that is doubling as a shelf he can jump on. Currently I am not using any grate or screen because I can't decide which one I want to use. The grate where everything falls through or the screen type where only the urine goes through.

I would like people's opinions on both of these types. Thanks!

p.s. in case someone wants to see litter box I included a photo. dagcage.jpg

If you're using pine pellets for bedding like most folks do, they suck the pee down to the bottom anyway so the screen strikes me as totally pointless unless you've got a digger on your hands. If you're going to use one of the two, my vote would be for the grate, otherwise you're going to have insane amounts of poop piled on the screen. Rabbits make up to 500 fecal poops a day and the majority of them are left in a pile while they're sitting in the litter box munching on hay.

Eggcrate (florescent lighting diffuser; often seen by looking upward in an elevator) is a great way to make a grate. You can buy it in the lighting section of any hardware store in a 2'x4' panel. This thread includes instructions on how to cut the grate to go in the litter box. It's durable and you can spray it off with a garden hose or even run it through the dishwasher.

That's what I used with my last rabbit. I don't think I cared much for it. If I remember correctly, it was kind of a pain in the butt to make. I have other ideas for a grate if I go that route. As far as the screen, from what I read, people like it because they can just take the screen out and throw the poop away. Seems like you would have to do that a lot with 500 poops. Who counted? lol  Also I wonder if my bun would flip it out of the box because the ones I saw didn't look like they were held down by anything.

But thank you for the link in case I change my mind. I don't remember how I made the last one, just remember it being a pain to cut.
