It has been at least 15 days since I posted. Nothing has changed except the marks come and go. The room mate now has the same smudges but to a lesser degree.

I wonder if its just some sort of condensation from the cold air and dirt on their noses? They are still very active, eat, drink and poop and except for the marks, seem normal. I have not heard sneezing but I am not with them from 9 at night until morning.

Has me stumped. Keep think Pasteurella but from what I've read, be it true or not, some of the symptoms can be nasty.

Ripley has had the same "nose smudges" since he was a lil' bun. I've always attributed it a chronic runny nose as our previous bunny from whereI got Ripley had what I"m almost positive was Pasturella. With Ripley, he never sneezes, just his nose is sometimes a bit wet and he has the smudges. And, since his nose is almost black/dark grey it doesn't stand out TOO much. He's a year and a half now and has always had this. When I asked the vet at Ripley's recent Bi/annual, he described it like this: "Well, it's probably a good runny nose. There're good and bad ones. Bad being like Pasturella." He said this isn't something to probably worry that much about though I always keep my eye on it.

It looks like the smudges are actually on the hair around the nose. I wonder if the vet would take a sample and look at it under a microscope or maybe send it off to a lab for a culture or something? Not sure how much it would cost, but you could check I guess.

My vet's comment was basically the same. Keep an eye on it. Well for $80 I was doing that. Now having it tested would be another $80 plus lab fees. I love my rabbits dearly and want what is best for them. But I don't want to throw money away and come back with nothing. I'd pay a fortune if I could get a positive diagnosis but I understand that rabbit health is still a mystery to many vets.

I'd like to think its a bit of a runny nose and there is dust but whenever I touch it, it seems dry. Maybe it has dried. It is not constant, comes and goes. One side or the other or both.

The fact it occured last winter and not throughout the summer makes me think some sort of condensation. Believe me I am watching them.
