Some time ago - about three or four months, now - I happened upon a certain bunny who has become a very good friend. She was rescued from a small slaughterhouse in downtown Hempstead. She came dangerously close to being someone's dinner that day. Luckily, her angel came to rescue her.

Hyzenthlay - Hizzie for short - has been with me ever since. She managed to littertrain herself in no more than 48 hours, and despite being treated awfully and fed nothing but cracked corn, she took to alfafa pellets, hay, and the occasional green treat like a fish takes to water. Long Island Rabbit Rescue was AMAZINGLY helpful, giving us both a cage, a carrier, a large supply of hay and food, and two vet visits. She can be rather skittish, still. Loud noises or noises she doesn't recognize startle her, and she runs bolting for the nearest safespot. She also HATES being picked up. However, when I lie down on the floor, she comes and will nose me for cheek rubs or just lounge next to me. When I skip around her, she binkies. She's never chewed a cord (well...one, but in her defense, it had grape jelly on it). When a friend spent a few days here with her own bunny, Hizzie was skeptical at first...and then, before I knew it, they were best buddies. I think that in knowledgeable bunnyhome, Hizzie will make one of the best pets anyone could ever have. She's about 8 months old and weighs around 7 pounds. I know that these pictures are extremely fuzzy, but they're the best I have for now.

Hizzie will come with her cage, her litterboxes, her waterbottle, her carrier, and whatever food and hay I have left. I was recently laid off, and no longer really have the money to keep her. Please, if there is anyone in the tri-state area interested in Hizzie, let me know right away! Thanks, guys!

Can Long Island Rabbit Rescue help you out with food and hay until you are back on your feet? Our rescue has done this in the past for people so they could keep their beloved rabbits in the home. It would be worth checking out.

Slave, I felt kind of guilty doing that; The rabbit rescue guys spent an arm and a leg helping me rescue Hizzie, and I really didn't want to be a nuisance to them again. (Not to mention there are unfortunately more influences than just finance leading to me having to find Hizzie a new home.)

Of course, you know how bunny news travels. Someone contacted them for me already! LoL. I guess, at the very least, they might be able to help a little while I continue to look for a home at a slightly less urgent pace.

I assure you that it wasn't me! I'm glad they can ease your stress a little. Best wishes for a new job and being able to keep your bunny. I can tell you are attached to her.

Hi there DimitriObsidian (I don't know your name):

I would be willing to foster Hizzie, if you still need someone to foster her. I am from Long Island and have a bunny.

I run a wildlife hospital in Huntington (http://www.volunteersforwildlife.org) and this is our slow season, so while we don't really work with domestic animals, most of us are pretty fond of rabbits and help out when we can. (Click on the "Our Staff" section of our website to see who we are.) If you still need help, we'd be happy to have Hizzie stay with usuntil she finds a permanent home.

I have a rabbit (you can see his blog, Gulliver's Travels, under my name) and my Education Coordinator, Lauren, is also a RO member (though she doesn't post a lot) and has 2 rabbits as well.

If you still need someone to foster Hizzie, write me back and we can talk.

Omg....I am in tears cause I can't believe someone wanted to eat Hizzie. She is a gorgeous bunny. I'm so glad you rescued her. :)

EileenH- That is wonderful you can take her in. Please keep us updated. :)

Someone just told me they saw Hizzie listed last week on Craig's list. Since there haven't been any new postings since the initial one, I assume she probably found an answer to the problem.

Oh well, I tried!
