Hi. I have two lip buns, sisters, about 6 months old. Their diet consists of pellets, Timothy hay & some fresh herbs & vegetables. They are happy & healthy bunnies on all accounts who generally live inside, mostly because of rainy weather. However, when the weather allows, usually 2-4 days a week, they get moved outside. They LOVE it, immediately binkying & playing about. Unfortunately, every single time I put them outside, one of them inevitably has a single diarrhea pile/mushy ecotrope pile. It never happens inside, but every single time they go outside, it happens. They don’t appear to be in distress & it only happens once. Can they have excitement diarrhea??

To my knowledge, no, excitement diarrhea is not something that happens. Are you sure it is true diarrhea?

If it is just smooshed/mushy cecotrope pile, it could be an unwillingness to eat their cecotropes when outside (because they'd rather be binkying and such), so they just leave it, and it inevitably smears. If they are grazing on fresh grass outside, the grass may be causing some GI distress: Grass - WabbitWiki

Thank you! When I moved them back inside this afternoon, the pile I found had dried. It was watery when I found it, but when it dried, it was all one & very sticky. There were other cecotrope piles in the pen upon my inspection. I think you’re correct in that they’re too excited/distracted to eat their secretions. They were binkying around all afternoon, grooming each other & just being happy lil buns. They’re currently in their room, where they spend most of their time, totally stretched out after happily eating dinner. I cleaned their inside room thoroughly, including all litter boxes, and there wasn’t a single sign of any diarrhea. Just normal bunny poop. So, I’m pretty sure all is well. Thank you so much!! I’ve owned bunnies in the past, but it was a different time and I was a kid. Learning so much & appreciate the help!!
