Whenever one of us humans sneezes, our smallest bun thumps to tellus of her displeasure over the interruption. Yet we experienced the 4.3-magnitude quakethat hitKane Co., IL at 4 am this morning; and not a single bun thumped.

Welive in the next county over from Kane; the quakedefinitely affected us. I felt the bed shaking and heard mydresser items rattling. Plus, it sounded like rumble of nearby train.

I'm still amazed thatour cat remained on our bed the entire time, and not one of our three buns thumped. I suspect that all four beasties were scared, but they looked more confused than frightened when I checked on them. I'm just glad that everyone is okay.

They were probably too "shaken up" to react, lol!!

That's what I mumbled to my practically-comatose husband as I climbed back into bed ("I don't think that the beasties even know what to make of what just happened"). LOL

I was on FB for a bit last nite, when my brother posts about it, he's in DeKalb. He said he woke up and said what the Blue hell was that? Lol. He said it was kinda freaky, and he's a cop...:p

Didn't feel anything here, and we have glass candy dishes on a glass table, I would have at least heard that, I would think. Nothing here.

Glad everything is ok. Perhaps they felt safe that no thumping was required?;)

Last year Baci was going crazy thumping and jumping on the couch scratching at us trying to get our attention. We didn't think much till we read that their was a minor quake 20 miles away! He was trying to warn us. Smart creatures they are.

I'd call it freaky, too. I mean, the entire house rattled, and we heard the sound of the earth moving (the rumbling train sound). It's fascinating but scary at the same time. Heh-heh...

It's a bit maddening that my dear hubby was (and still is) very relaxed about the whole thing, even though it was his first earthquake, too. Here's how our 4-am conversation went:

Me (starting to wake and feeling scared/confused): "What the hell is that?!?"

DH (in a very relaxed monotone): "Earthquake."

Me(more panicky now): "WHAT?!?!"

DH (in the same relaxed tone): "Earthquake."

Me (uber-panicked): "Are you SERIOUS???"

DH (still speaking in a monotone): "Yes."

He told me the next day that he'd have felt panicky if things started falling down/crumbling. I guess it's a good thing that in moments that make me freak out, he tends to remain calm.

If our buns did try to warn us, we didn't wake from any thumping. (I was actually in a deep sleep, so it's possible that I didn't hear a warning.)

Our home is located 16 miles from the quake's epicenter. That explains how/why we felt the quake as soon as it hit.

LOL! Poor thing was probably tap dancing around the bed warning you and gave up!

I live in Alaska. There are a LOT of earthquakes here- something like 2-3 times as many as in California. We have little quakes every day. It's actually amazing that I've been here for 4 1/2 years and haven't felt a big one yet. I've been woken up from sleep by earthquakes here and last summer there was a period of about 2 weeks where we had a decent sized earthquake every couple of days. It was kind of eerie because we were just waiting for there to be a big one! Anyway, my bunnies and birds never reacted to the earthquakes, not even ones that were strong enough to wake us up. I think it's because we live right next to train tracks and they're used to having the house rattle several times a day when the train comes by.

Snowy! How are ya'? :biggrin2:

I suspect that you're right: your beastie crew likely doesn't react because everyone is so used to local train passing by. LOL

I've long known that my heart couldn't take California (with all the quakes, fires, and mudslides). But now I know that I couldn't handle Alaska, either. ;)

In all seriousness, the Midwest's New Madrid Faultscares the daylights outta me. Even more scary is the fact that it's "due" to "blow" soon, per seismology experts. I was hoping to move away from IL (and possibly the Midwest) before the time comes, but that may not happen. *sigh*

It all depends where you live in relation to the faults that cause the earthquakes.
Can you believe that I've lived in Californa since 1996, and have yet to feel an earthquake? Here in the Central Valley there are no faults, thus we have no quakes.
Relatives living in the bay area, near San Francisco, on the other hand, usually have several small quakes each year.

But, we don't have tornados either! I think I'd rather have the occasional earthquake, than the frequent tornados or hurricanes. Or snow storms of the century :).

We've never been plagued by mudslides, or forrest fires either. We have no hills to slide, and no forrests to burn, lol. Just agriculture around us.
So far no floods, either. I feel pretty safe here in the middle of California :).

It's true that in IL, we can (and do) get tornadoes, even just outside of Chicago. Just two years ago, several touched down around our town. That was one scary evening! And, yes, we can get a lot of snow at times, but that's more doable when you have the equipment to remove it (i.e., the snow plows and salt trucks).

I just need to find me a place that's not prone to any natural disasters. Now where might that be??? :biggrin2:
