My doe, Adrian, has the beginning stages of ear mites. She is still with her litter of 5 weeks. People are telling me to put mineral oil in her ears with a dropper. Will this really work? Or should I rush her to the vet? If you feel the oil does work, do I have to treat the babies with oil too? (the kits are not showing signs of mites) Thanks in advance

I'm going to move this to our infirmary, where the mods there can give you better information about what to do. I hope the mama and babies are doing well.

I would use ear mite drops rather than using just vegetable oil. I wouldn't treat the babies if they are not showing signs.

Can you not give oral ivermectin to a rabbit who's nursing? Or a topical ear medication? I have heard of using oil, but I think medicated drops like Revolution or Ivermectin would be better. You don't want it to spread to the babies if it takes too long to treat with oil.

I do not use oil. Old and outdated treatment. You will drown the adults but you will have hatching eggs. The best treatment I have seen for ear mites is a drug called Acarexx....and it does need a RX. The advantage of this drug is that it needs to be dosed only once. It is an ear drop. I use the kitten version and use 1 vial in each ear. Revolution would be my second choice and Ivermectin if I had to.

Vet visit! Not only the mom but the babies, too. This is not something to mess around with.

When I had to use it I only needed to do it once and no more mites. Not sure how it killed the hatching eggs but I used it roughly 10 times and each and every time onlyone "treatment" was needed.

They say Revolution is great for all types of mights but you need a perscription and it is very expensive.
