Ok trying to make a decision here and would really appreciate some opinions. We have got previous rabbit experience and tossing up between a dwarf netherland and a dwarf lop. My 9 yo (who has rodent and bunny experience) will be the main caregiver wih me picking up what doesn't get done.

I really like the little netherlands but hearing that they aren't the best temperament wise. I thought it would have ore to do with upbringing and maintaining handling but I'm also aware different breeds have different traits.

Ultimately it will be my sons choice but knowing which way to steer (coerce) him would be helpful.

Many thanks for any help.

As far as temperament, that really comes down to the individual rabbit. Do you plan to show or breed or will the rabbit just be a pet? If you're looking for a pet then I'd urge you to check out local rescues or shelters that may have rabbits and may be able to let you know about their temperaments ahead of time.

I REALLY second the adoption thing. I was able to go to a shelter and ask for a rabbit that LIKED to cuddle and be with people. Those are rare qualities in rabbits, but the shelter had an adorable lop that liked to do just that.

Buying a rabbit from a pet store sets them up to have personality problems becuase they are often not handled from birth. Thats not to say that good rabbits can't come from pet stores, but its much more of a gamble on health and temperament.

Also, shelter rabbits are spayed/ neutered which also really helps them to be cleaner and friendlier. In my opinion unless you really want to show the rabbit it has no downsides.

But, to answer your original question I've had a great great experience with lops as have a LOT of other people on this website. Though it really depends on the individual rabbits, it may be safer to go with a breed that is known to oftentimes have a good temperament as opposed to a breed that is rumored to not.

I made some phone calls and used good ole google yesterday and have decided to go with a mini lop. I found a wonderful knowledgeable breeder whose young kids handle the rabbits as they're growing up. Really seems like the perfect situation for us. We'll be picking up bunny in about 3 weeks. I've also found a vet that has alot of experience with desexing rabbits so will be using her when that time comes and for the calicivirus vaccination.

Thank you for your replies.

I do a bit of wok with taking on rescues (parrots and native animals) so every so often it's nice to get a new baby. I don't have an issue with rescuing, just feel like i do my bit in a different area of the animal world.
