my rabbit is a year old and has been fixed, hes out of no where started being kinda reclusive and hidding constantly. he is a house rabbit and we spoil him like a child! hes also a lone bunny and we cant figure out how he can go from playful to well like almost a bunny that had a hard life so to speak. he seems really healthy but distant. he lets us hold him but by our solisitaion only.

I don't have a dwarf rabbit but I have heard that a they can be tempermental.I don't know if that is fact or fiction but i have heard that
I would examine this rabbit for a health issue. if he is being reclusive it's possible that he is sick. Is he eating Normally.? is he pooping and peeing normally.? Watch him carefully as he may have a problem that doesn't show..like dental problems. if he doesn't improve soon I would take him to a rabbit knowledgeable vet and have him checked over

Your bunny sounds like my Billy. He's a Netherland Dwarf also, and is very temperamental. We spoil him and treat him like a baby, but he's so sensitive and scares easily. Half the time I don't even know what is scaring Billy or why he won't come out of his cage. He can be pretty reclusive at times.

I've found that I just have to let him be and he'll come out of the cage on his own (usually sneaking out when nobody is looking). It can be really frustrating when we want to play with him and he won't come out, but his cage is too big to reach in and grab him (and grabbing him would probably scare the living daylights out of him :p) so we've resorted to waiting patiently.

Overall ours seems like the kind of bunny that does what he wants when he wants. He does not take orders, he will not even follow treats! He must be served like a prince :).

So my best guess for why your bunny is acting this way is
  • it's part of his personality OR
  • something scared him and you don't realize it so he's acting more reclusive (this is a tough one cause we've had Billy for over a year and I still don't understand all of the things that scare him)
Of course it could be something totally different, but that's all I can think of right now! :)

its not that he is scared because he loves to be held, i just think he maybe more of an independent bunny. its kinda gotten worse scince he has gotten a lil older now... must be a teenage thing. but he never bites and nevers scratches us. who knows maybee hes just an onery kid... dose anyone think a companion might help?

If you go the route of finding him a companion, I would definitely look for bunny rescues so you can set him up on bunny dates and see how he does. I made the mistake of just randomly picking out a bunny because I knew nothing about bunny dates, and I ended up with two single boys that I can't bond.

It sounds about right that he is just an independent bunny, because that's how my Billy is and yours sounds just like him. :)

thats somthin to look into. i did find out that he loves to play in a little fort i make for him with pillows and blankets. he digs at them and loves it. i was dosing off and he woke me up with about a min and a half of licks. same with my wife...he is weird but i love him.
