dont always trust a vets word

hi everyone,
i was recently on,desperately searching for ways to get my baby mabel to eat as she is suffering with what was an advanced case of GI stasis [caused by a dental problem].
i had three vets tell me there was nothing more they coud do and to put her to sleep.i refused,i believed she still had life to live,and thought the vets were to quick to want her euthanised because they admitted they werent experienced in rabbits,they told me to see a specialist in rabbit care,i found out i coudnt afford it.

well after a lot of hard work and upsetting times,i have finaly nursed mabel back to health,she is now back outside in her house/run,eating a lot of different foods along with her sister, and is no longer on liquid parafin for her bowels, i am no longer syringe feeding her baby food-mabel refused critical care feed so the next best thing i found was rabbit friendly baby food instead.

please dont let your vet force you into choosing euthanasia,have a long think about it and whether your hard working input coud give them the quality of life they need.

Hi, what you are saying is pretty bad but if you actually went to a proper rabbit vet then you would of got the best answer.... That is your experience with vets you have been with and most people one her wouldn't go to the same vet. All the vets I have been to have all assessed my rabbits well and truthfully, they tell it straight and tell me what I need to do and if they don't know what to do they recommend a vet that will know. When my mocha was sick they cared about her like it was her bunny and she called to check up on her everyday!

I'm glad your Mabel is doing well now but everyone makes mistakes and please don't say don't trust them because most are trustworthy.

Rabbits are tough because they aren't an animal that I think very many people take to the vet and thus, there aren't too many vets that specialize in them. You need to find a vet that knows what they are doing. Our vet is at an all exotic clinic and specializes in rabbits, I would trust whatever she said without hesitation. She has never led me astray and we have had a large number of complicated cases.

Although I do think that if there is ever any doubt, doing your own research and getting a second opinion is always a good way to go.

Excuse me, I believe she said "don't always trust a vet's word" and I completely agree. She did not say not to trust any vet ever. Sometimes you have to follow your gut, sometimes people are out to make money, and sometimes people are too pig headed to say "I'm not sure, but let me help you find someone who can help".

Glad to hear it worked out for you. My male Lion Head stopped eating last September. I took him to the vet and she said his (2) front upper teeth needed cutting - and proceeded to "snap" them off, albeit in 3 stages to each one. She also gave me some Critical Care powder. However, on following her instructions: 1 to 1 with water, I just ended up with thick sludge that was no use to man or beast. After experimenting, I got a working solution: mix 1 portion of CC with 4 portions of hot water in a plastic container, apply the lid and shake like hell till you get a nice smooth mixture. Allow to cool and (this is the clincher) ADD A SMALL AMOUNT OF UNSWEETENED PINEAPPLE JUICE. Feed it to him in a large plastic syringe - the size you put ink in your printer. Method: Place him on your lap, apply the syringe with one hand and massage his belly with the other hand.
