Hi guys,

Soooooooooooo my latest wrongdoings include begging Mario for a puppy. Lol. :biggrin2:Since we are in an appartment, it has to be a small dog.

I was thinking of a Zuchon (aka Schichon or Teddy Bear) which is a mix between a Shih tzu and Bichon. This means that it is a hypoallergenic dog which is good because there won't be hair all over the place. I had thought of a teacup Yorkshire but I'm scared that it won't be comfy with kids later on whenI have some.

I've never owned a dog before... Is this a good breed? I know that they are very playful dogs but have good personalities although they tend to bark some. Is it easy to train them not to be yappers? Would it be okay with the bunnies?

Is there another breed you would suggest instead?

If you are going to buy a puppy and not rescue, I would caution from finding a puppy online. I would recommend finding a breeder in your area that you can meet them and their dogs before bringing your puppy home. I have heard so many heartbreaking stories of people who bought a puppy online or from a pet store, only to have to spend thousands of dollars at the vet because the puppy was raised in substandard conditions or the parent's health wasn't taken into consideration.

If you need a non-shedding dog definitely stick with a true purebred. There is no guaruntee that the designer breeds will be non-shedding. If one parent is a shedding breed and one parent is a non-shedding breed, odds are all pups will shed- despite what you might be told.

Check this link out to see if you've found a good breeder:

No no, I am going to get one from a pet shop. I know the boss so he has a few breeders that we've worked with that I liked. I can't get to a breeder and I wouldn't buy online. The pet shop has a health guarantee also, and they are good. They let the dogs run around during the day. :)Anyway, for that it's not a problem. I was more asking on the personality itself. Thanks for the info :biggrin2:

Just for the record, I'm entirey against the whole "designer breed" trend. For example, if people want a dog with poodle fur, why not get a poodle? They're been perfected for years. Crossing two dogs will not guarantee that fur type.

Also, never ever get a dog that is purposely bred to weight in under its breed standard aka "teacup" dogs. They are almost always unhealthy because they are simply bred too small.

On the same topic, I certainly wouldn't reccommend a terrier breed around rabbits, considering what they've been bred for.

First, that "breed" is a mutt. They will not breed true, so you can't ask what the "breed" is like.

Second, DO NOT BUY A DOG FROM A PET STORE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE!!!!!!!! Google it. Google pet store dogs, google puppy mills. Don't be fooled, any "breeder" who sells their puppies to a petstore IS NOT A GOOD BREEDER!!!!!

Rescue a dog instead!! Or, as another poster said, DO YOUR RESEARCH finding a GOOD breeder. There are MANY MANY MANY UNETHICAL BREEDERS and BE CAREFUL.

Yes, I feel strongly about this!

Sorry but I feel differently. Just like not every rabbit breeder breeds them cruelly or for meat. I have worked personally with the breeders and know what they are like. Not everyone who breeds runs a puppy mill. I think it is unfair to make such a general statement. I do agree that there are many, but luckily I don't know them personally or I'd strangle them myself. As for the breed, yeah so it's a hybrid. I have no problem with that at all. Just like I have no problem with a mixed breed rabbit. I do believe that though not purebred, they are as gorgeous and can have any of the problems either purebreed could have. I liked the idea that the cross helped with the breathing problems and ears etc.

So anyway, I have no problem getting a mutt. Imagine all the dogs that would be homeless if we only went for purebred ones. I don't mind at all, I'm not doing it for show. And like I said, if I feel right about getting it from this shop than I would. I am able to judge for myself what I deem acceptable and what I don't. Plus, if I wanted a dog, I'd have no choice to get it from a petshop. I cannot access a breeder and even the SPCA is far. Plus, no offense, but as a first time dog-owner I'd want mine as a baby. I checked the SPCA and they had no kind that I wanted.

I don't think it was wrong to ask if anyone had experience with zuchons and get a general feel for it. If you know shih tzus and if you know bichons, you can have a general idea as the zuchon can have any trait belonging to either dog.

My personal reason for liking the zuchon is because I like it. Sorry but I do. I don't like the look of the poodle, and I don't want a white bichon. I loved the coloring of the shih tzu and liked the idea of the cross.

Anyway, I think people are entitled to their opinion. I respect it, though I respect it more when given it's offered with respect to the other person. I'm not stupid and don't jump in without doing my research and I certainly wouln't encourage someone who is cruel.

I asked an opinion on a small dog and how they can co-exist with rabbits and if anyone had heard of them. I didn't ask to be bashed because I got it from a place that I trust personally.

Thanks for the advice. I won't be posting again about it if it will have members get all jumpy and cross over it. My post wasn't meant to offend, it was only to find out about somone knowing abou the zuchons and if they had problems with bunnies or other health issues.

Also wanted to add... being that I am in Montreal, any good breeder understands that a good pet shop can sell a dog. We don't have breeders here in the city. Any GOOD breeder would not be in the city in the first place. Montrealers don't get their dogs from breeders directly. I'm just fortunate enough that the pet shop I know is very serious about letting people adopt from them. There were many times when I refused to sell a dog. I don't know many pet shops around here who have extra staff on hand to spend hours going through the contrat and how to raise a puppy. I don't know many places where employees were absolutely encouraged not to sell dogs to anyone they do not feel comfy with. Just saying, maybe it's different with the locality.

I have 2 Bichon Shih-tzu crosses. They are 4 and 5 years old and I got them from a breeder. I would reccomend you be wary about size. My older one is 22 pounds and not over weight, while the younger is about 14. My friends have similar crosses that are under 10 pounds. In my expirence, they don't shed but can matt easily and require lots of brushing and a trip to the groomer every couple of months (or do it yourself). They are tough and don't need to be babied. There are no small kids in my house but both of them love children. They get excited but are eager to learn and train. I reccomend an obidence class that is reward based. They do bark but training will help. Exceecise is good, leash walks should be about 1/2 hour or longer. Off leash parks are wonderful if you have done the traning.

both of mine are good around the bunnys but can snap if they get annoyed. So always watch them around children and bunnies.

When you buy, don't be set about markings and coloring. Both of mine started out dark and lightened a ot in the first year. There is variation of caot type, from curly to strait, puppy fir is a good indication as are mom and dad.

I love my dogs and would reccomend them.

Mesage me if you want some more info or possibably pics.

I'm sorry you thought I was bashing you. I was NOT. And I have NO PROBLEM with mutts. Including the dog I just helped cross the Rainbow Bridge 2 weeks ago, we have/had 8 dogs. 2 are purebred (one I just happen to obtain from a friend, the other I carefully sought out his breeder) and the rest are mutts. Mutts are wonderful. I was simply stating the cross you seek is a mutt, not a breed. Nothing wrong with that.

About the pet stores. Responsible breeders are picky about where their dogs go. They wont' sell them to pet stores, b/c that does not allow this. They make sure the pups go to the right homes. Again, do a google search about pet store pups. And be prepared for more issues vs getting a pup from a responsible breeder.

Next, being close to breeders has nothing to do with it. Pups can easily be shipped. My best friend's rotti came from two states away. She did her research, and chose her breeder carefully, and had him flown to her. My own purebred that I sought out, I drove 10 hours one way to pick him up.

And, I don't disagree about getting one as a pup, that's how I prefer to get dogs as well, so that Ican bring them up as I want, with the other animals I have, ect. Even pups are easy to find via rescues, but you certainly do not have to go that route, it's just an option.

Obviously you do not wish me to help you find your next lifelong companion, so I"ll say no more, other than good luck, hope you find the perfect, healthy pup for you! :)

(((((Chey)))))

I'm sorry but it sounded like you were shouting and were just in disbelief that I would get it from there etc etc..

Personally, I would never get a pup I have never seen. We don't have as many breeders here as you might over there. And I am serious when I say most montrealers don't get their pups from breeders simply because they don't want to drive there. I would but I have no car and no one to drive me. Lol.

Anyway, we won't be getting a puppy so thank you anyways. I will keep the info though as hopefully we will get one in the future :)

I apologize, I didn't mean for it to come across that way... that's the problem with the net! :(

Hope we can be friends?

And, sorry also, since you are in another country, things may well be different there. I need to keep that in mind when I post! Though I still do think you could get one shipped to you... but that's to an airport, so no car sure won't work for that still!

Meh my 2 cents is, don't put a name on a mutt. My dog is a chihuahua/dachshund mix and if anyone ever calls it a chiweenie they will get bopped across the head.

You should withhold huggies. That'll convince Mario otherwise. Puppies for all!!!!

:rofl:that made me giggle. And I totally agree!

Hey you :biggrin2:How you doing? Been missing ya...

No, I won't be getting a puppy right now. However, I think we might be getting a kitten. MrBinky really loves kittens and I would like for him to have a pet of his own. He likes the bunnies but isn't used to them and has yet to bond with them. I think a kitten would be a good addition to the family. :)He has to leave his cat behind in Greece and I think he misses her...
